Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 4-7–This second book in the trilogy continues 11-year-old Ivy's quest to fulfill her role as the prophesied “Noble Child” destined to cure her country's rightful king from a strange illness. In The Hollow Bettle (Knopf, 2009), Ivy defeated the evil monarch who usurped control of Caux from good King Verdigris and had a penchant for poisoning the unhappy population. Those with money hired food tasters trained by the secretive Tasters Guild to keep from becoming a victim. Ivy and her friend Rowan, an inept Guild-trained taster, were forced to run away after he failed to detect poison in his employer's food. Now they must save King Verdigris. Many of Verjouce's henchmen pursue them but Ivy's most persistent enemy is Sorrel Flux, her former taster, who keeps trying to kill her. When Ivy's exposed to a deadly weed that can transport its victims to a dark realm, she's not sure she can defeat it. This inventive story is full of strange and mysterious characters with peculiar names and viscerally descriptive locations. Kids are sure to love it.Sharon Rawlins, New Jersey State Library, Trenton

From Booklist

Poison Ivy and her friends search for a magical doorway on their quest to save the king from his illness and deliver the people of Caux from the clutches of the malevolent guild of food testers. Can Ivy find the king before the guild finds her? In this second book in the Poisons of Caux series, Appelbaum continues to thrill, with vivid descriptions and inspired plot twists. Here is an imaginary place replete with tasty villains and true-hearted heroines, a worthy next step from Kate DiCamillo’s Tale of Despereaux (2003) or Brian Jacques’ Redwall series. Grades 4-7. --Cindy Welch --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

I liked Appelbaum's first installment of the trilogy, but was not sure how well she would maintain the characters' consistency through the rest of the series. That said, Book II greatly exceeded expectations. Without straying from the what made her characters so engaging in Book I, this sequel builds on that foundation by developing characters on various fronts.

I have 2 copies at home- one which I read to my 5 year-old before bed, and another which my 9 year-old brings everywhere with her. We've already decided to dress her as Ivy for halloween this year! Along with this being a great read, it has helped me connect with my kids' imaginations like never before- that is something to be celebrated :)

Ms. Appelbaum has done it again! The highly anticipated second book in the trilogy of The Poisons of Caux is beautiful and mysterious with just the right amount of darkness and danger to keep you hooked from start to finish. Her words paint pictures so vivid and full of wonder it makes me look at the natural world around me with a much keener eye. This book, as well as the first, are great reads for all ages.

I've been reading this series to my 9-year old son. The second book is even better than the first. The plot is filled with suspense, has great characters and satisfies all of your senses (visual, auditory, taste, touch, smell). What a great story - can't wait for the third book to come out.

I must agree with my fellow reviewers -- this tale gets better with each volume! I am a continuity/multi-book series junkie (as well as a Fantasy addict), and this series has me hostage. Am I mixing adult-themed metaphors in the discussion of a children's fantasy epic? Yes, I am. Maybe I'm trying to prove this series is for all ages, or maybe someone slipped something into my dinner. If only I had a Taster!

They say don't judge a book by its cover, but by all means, do so with The Poisons of Caux series. The text is as luscious and mesmerizing as the artwork!

CANNOT WAIT FOR BOOK III!
