As someone who is new to the job market, I have found that the nature of the political job market is extremely different than others. If I didn't have this book, I'm not sure if I would know what I know now. Are you currently looking for work in politics? Are you confused how to network your way into your next job? If so, then Alexandra has the right solutions for you! Each chapter highlights key decisions you should make from taking an economics course to designing your "60 second spot." I was particularly impressed with the level of detail she provided and how to effectively maneuver the job market. I purchased this book in mid-August 2012, curled up and read the whole book in one day. It has been loved with highlighter markets and post-it notes.

For those that have a desire to 'be involved in politics', run, don't walk to this guide on how to be successful. Al has captured the unwritten rules of relationships, expectations and obstacles in the political field. Most important, she reminds the reader that the reason to work in politics is not the gamesmanship, but the true desire to serve the public good through advocacy, transparency and ethics. This is a great read for the young advocate as well as the seasoned careerists considering a transition into public service.

Al has done an incredible job capturing all of those aspects of campaigns and politics that you will never get in a political science class. With nearly two decades of local, state and federal campaigns and political work under my own belt it's easy to say I wish I had a copy of The Political Ladder at the start of my career. I will absolutely have this on my recommended and required reading list for all those political neophytes seeking advice.
