Book Description

Rae Lewis-Thornton is an Emmy Award winning AIDS Activist and the first African-American Woman to tell her story on a cover of a national publication, Essence December 1994.

I thought that she would never live to see 50 years of age. In the backdrop of my 50th birthday, I trace my life and my collision with respectability; what a black woman ought to do and be. I’ve been wanting to write a book by my 50th birthday for at least the last eight months. Something that spoke to the very core of who I am as a women; My 50 years of wisdom about sex, dating, self-love and being true to one’s self, but I kept procrastinating.

Then on May 1, 2011 I received a call that would change my life, forever. After I dried my tears I sat at the computer and the words simply flowed. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority rescinding my membership as an honorary member gave me the fuel I need to unpack a larger issue that I tackle everyday. What kind of woman I am? Am I, “Respectable,” enough as a Woman, Christian and Minister. While this book is autobiographical in nature, it it not my full story. My memoir is yet to be published.

This book is however, my story. It unpacks the core of who I am and what I do. I don’t know how to be anything else. I am my ministry and my ministry is wrapped around my journey. My experiences have shaped me for better or worse and they inform my day-to-dayness. My journey landed me into Delta and it landed me out of Delta. This book traces my journey and my collision course with, “The Politics of Respectability, from my mother to men. The need to be seen as respectable ruled my life and left me battered as a girl physically, emotionally and sexually abused and then as a woman living with HIV in secret for 7 years.

I will use my story in first person, some pass blog posts from my Diva Living With AIDS Blog, as well as, my seminary and PhD studies to craft my collision course with respectability that ended in my explosion from Delta.

This books is a must read!!! I completed it in just two days. This is a accurate account of attempting to learn about and find your way as a black woman. Rae gives it to you straight with no chaser, as she gives details on abuse, relationships and the ugly side of sexual relationships that have gone bad. Rae's story gives insight into the secrets of the black family that causes our children to grow up looking and searching for the love they never received at home. She shows how a person's childhood has a direct impact on their future. Rae's accounts of her perseverance through all her life struggles will be a blessing to everyone who reads the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting! August 2, 2012

If you have followed Ms. Rae Lewis Thornton throughout the years as I have, you will find this book The Politics of Respectability on par with her witty, raw and "truth be told" style. She does not disappoint. Compiled mostly of her blogs about living with HIV and then AIDS, she weaves her personal story, balancing her triumphs with her pain and her joy with her hurt. In fact, she does an excellent job of explaining the difference between pain and hurt as well. I commend her for reaching her milestone birthday, age 50, given that in her earlier speeches and talks, she shared with some high school students that she would be dead by the time they graduated. Like Ms. Thornton, I believe that God has a use for us all. If you are judgmental and a fundamentalist, you might have problems with her style, as some do. However, if you are willing to open your mind and perhaps even your heart, you will find something very valuable in her journey and the way that she has chosen to walk it.

Soar, Rae Lewis-Thornton and tell your story. Shout it and scream it if you must, hit us dead between the eyes. If you have prevented even one person from becoming infected with AIDS, your job has been done. Below are the current statistics on HIV/AIDS and black women.

It's as simple as using a condom-- it does not have to be you!

Thank you, Ms. Thornton! God bless you and keep you. I pray God's greatest blessings upon you.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) African Americans face the most severe burden of HIV of all racial/ethnic groups in the United States (US). Despite representing only 14% of the US population in 2009, African Americans accounted for 44% of all new HIV infections in that year. Compared with members of other races and ethnicities, African Americans account for a higher proportion of HIV infections at all stages of disease--from new infections to deaths. In 2009, black women accounted for 30% of the estimated new HIV infections among all blacks. Most (85%) black women with HIV acquired HIV through heterosexual sex. The estimated rate of new HIV infections for black women was more than 15 times as high as the rate for white women, and more than three times as high as that of Latina women.
