Product Description

Miles has a weird job carrying old men around a pool at a water park, but never mind: He's lined himself up for a summer of working in the sun, drinking with his friends, and hitting on his good looking co-workers. When Auburn actually takes Miles seriously, a real, live relationship grows out of those lazy months. And something very real and very alive grows out of that relationship.

4.0 out of 5 stars Creepy stuff, July 6, 2010
This review is from: The Pool (Kindle Edition)
This is a compelling if disquieting read. Really a cleverly done piece of work.

Using a strong tone, thick characterization, and clarity of setting that people tend to call "literary fiction," the very short novel or very long story uses a plot that's, what? a blend of sci-fi and horror, I guess, to capture what goes on in a romantic relationship.

It's really tough to categorize this story because of the way it's written and the actual plot it follows, but in the end, like most things worth reading/listening to/watching, it's basically a love story.

A pretty grim and haunting one. Heartily recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well-Done, Quick Read, September 1, 2010
This review is from: The Pool (Kindle Edition)
I flew through this novella, not because of its length, but because I enjoyed both the prose and the character development. The setting is rich, the plot a little twisted, and it all comes together in a well-crafted work that I'm really glad I chose to read. Merrill masters a fine balance among realism, horror and humor. The blend's risky, but the result is impressive. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Startling, and unexpectedly real, August 21, 2010

This review is from: The Pool (Kindle Edition)
This is the first I've read of Merrill's work, and it took me in quite immediately and held me there through the end. As I first read the story, I stepped off the subway still reading, my interest too much to stop partway through chapter.

The story seemed driven, and effectively so, by the eerie events of its plot. Days later it struck me that however strange and compelling the plot, it was the characters' humanity that was still with me. This story's mystery runs deep. Strong recommendation here.
