Review

The Pope's Conspiracy is a great read which tightly binds the intrigue of a thriller with the lightness of a narrative history. Fans of historical fiction should read it as the thrilling introduction to a very interesting period in time.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. The story of the plot to assassinate the Medici brothers is right in the sweet spot of Italian history that fascinates me. The author interweaves this historical account with the tale of a Jewish printer and his family who come to in Florence fleeing Spanish persecution. The details of that storyline were new to me.

The arrival of Benjamin and Ester Catalan with their Gutenberg press causes a shift in both Florentine bookmaking and politics. Befriended by the powerful Medici family, they quickly discover that this is not the only alliance they need to make to survive. I found the parts about their Jewish heritage and religious practices nicely balanced the murder plot. Knowing the outcome, I found my attraction to the characters quite poignant. Even so, the pacing kept me wanting to see how things would turn out.

Mr. Weinstein has done his homework and he pulls in all of the real people who were involved in the plot, bringing them alive for the reader. I was especially pleased with the final section of the book that explains the liberties he took with their stories as well as the basis for his fictional characters.

If you're interested in Italian Renaissance history, or a good murder plot, this is well worth reading. Bravo!(less)

"ThePope's Conspiracy" by Lewis Weinstein is a fearful, heartwarming, caring journey of the Catalan family from their home in Spain to a home in 15th century Italy. It invokes the struggles the Jewish people faced, but also the de Medici Catholic family who embraced and helped them thru their trials and tribulations. Mr. Weinstein's research into the true history of people and places in that time period add tremendously to this wonderful read.

Whether one enjoys a history lesson or simply wishes a great read Lew Weinstein satisfies all readers with this second in a series thriller.
Apart from inserting a fictional family, the historical references are accurate and illuminating. Language reads easily but allows seeming visualization of the scene and times. Can't wait for the third in the series.

Format: Paperback
"The Pope's Conspiracy" is a first rate historical novel that picks up where Mr. Weinstein's earlier novel, "The Heretic," leaves off. Set in Florence at the time of Lorenzo the Magnificent, it presents the drama of Benjamin and Esther Catalan as they struggle to create new lives for themselves in exile and get caught up in a conspiracy directed by Pope Sixtus IV against the powerful Medici family. The gripping narrative is crisp and yet takes care to introduce the leading personalities of the day in "real life" settings and also to impart the sights, sounds and smells of Florence at the height of its power and influence. This novel will appeal to lovers of well researched and written historical fiction and anyone with an interest in fifteenth century Florence. Although the events follow those of "The Heretic," one need not have read Mr. Weinstein's earlier novel to enjoy "The Pope's Conspiracy," which succeeds admirably on a stand-alone basis as well.

If your Italian Renaissance history is vague, if you sometimes confuse the Borgias and the Medicis as I did, this is a historical novel for you.
It will be very apparent that the research is thorough.
What makes this history such a pleasure to learn is the writing. Weinstein's ability to spin a tale that endears the good guys, makes you loathe the bad guys, and leaves you gripped by the tension between them, is extraordinary.
