Book Description

June 22, 2010

What does it mean to think, believe, and act like an American?

The soul of America is far more than a concept-it is a people.  Even the most sacred principles mean very little unless lived out passionately by an informed citizenry. In The Portable Patriot you'll find a carefully assembled sampling of American history's most formative words, written by the people who

made that extraordinary history. Speeches and sermons, essays and extracts, poems and proclamations illumine such values as independence, virtue, humility, bravery, thrift, prayer, enterprise, liberty, and reliance on God. While peering back to the cradle of America's national identity, The Portable Patriot

also points a way forward, compelling us to heed poet John Dickinson's plea to "rouse your bold hearts at fair Liberty's call."

"Nothing ignites a patriot's heart-or the hope that the truths of our founding era will prevail again-like the documents assembled in The Portable Patriot. How grateful we should be, and how quick to make these historic words our own."

--Stephen Mansfield, author, The Forgotten Founding Father and The Faith of the American Soldier

"Our current struggles over taxation, federal debt, and limited government are part of a larger American story. Kudos to Miller and Parrish for highlighting these essential passages."

--Hon. Andrew P. Napolitano,

Senior Judicial Analyst, Fox News Channel

The Portable Patriot, edited by Joel Miller and Kristen Parrish, is a collection of our nations most important and intimate documents, letters, and sermons. It shows you the history, the full history, behind our country from the view of those who were there.

I will say, this is now my favorite book. This collection includes such writings as the Mayflower Compact (something often overlooked in our childrens educations), sermons during pre-revolutionary times showing the passion and the heart behind the desire to be free, letters from George Washington, Ben Franklin and others, and documents such as the Articles of the Confederation and more. This is a must have book for any home. We will be using it in our homeschool years to lay down the foundation of full understanding about the history of our nation. We hope our children will be well versed to defend the true intentions of the start of our country. But, even without the homeschooling aspect, this is a book every American should read in order to be informed about our past. Without our past, we have no future.

A truly awesome little book August 21, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I've been a long-time history buff, but have an education limited by what our educational system believes we need to know. This little book shattered barriers for me and helped me learn about things I had never heard about before.

First, as a collector of books, this book has a very pleasing format. It is published as a small hardcover with deckled page edges and the interior of the boards has a copy of the signatures that appear on the Declaration of Indenpendence. The format and the way this book is put together gives it a nice feel - I did say I love and collect books.

This book is by no means comprehensive - the authors said as much in their introduction - it can't hold all of the important documents related to our great country, but it contains what the editors felt was most important. Also, they admit that the documents that they do have in this book, are not presented in their entirety - the book would be too long.

I got a lot out of this little book. There were documents and stories I had never heard of. For example, "John Cotton on the Abuse of Power." In reading this I could feel some of the first stirrings that colonists felt prior to the revolution. Another item that was of very high interest to me was "James Otis Opposes Arbitrary Law Enforcement." Another book I recently read, a fictional account of that time period (The Rebellion of Jane Clarke: A Novel), touched upon the character of James Otis. It was so interesting to read something by this great man. Finally, "the First Inaugural Address of George Washington," gave me a window to see into a time where our country was founded and a window to our first president.

This is one of the most awewome little books I've ever owned. History buff, or not, it is impressive and touched a chord in my soul, the soul of an American.

Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
If you're like me and went through the American Public School system, odds are that you probably know what the politics of your social science teacher were but precious little on the American founding documents and ideas. Other than a few phrases here and there, I never actually read the Declaration of Independence until I was well into college. And as far as other important documents? Not a chance.
By the way, I got the highest grade in the class in almost every history or government class I took, so the other students knew even less than I did.

Well, this little book remedies the neglect given these vital documents and ideas in our current public schools. Every child and adult over the age of 12 ought to read the Declaration of Independence and Constitution yearly if they feel any duty at all from their citizenship. This book makes it easy.

Besides the Declaration and Constitution, there are also other document like the Articles of Confederation (the first US government after Independence), various Federalist Papers, letters, songs, sermons and poems. The book is organized into 5 chapters with documents grouped toegether by subject and age. There is no commentary; these are simply the documents themselves and you are not forced to hear some pundit's biased interpretation.

I look at this book as a good starting point which can be used for quick reference and as a source for author's to whom you can look for further information.

All the greats are here: Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, as well as other lesser-known founders and also every day observers and commentators.

Overall, a great source and a great service. This ought to be at the desk of every student so that they can refer to the original American ideals when they learn of America or try and interpret current events in the light of American history. Highly recommended and 5 stars.
