Comment: This book has already been well loved by someone else and that love shows. It MIGHT have highlighting, underlining, be missing a dust jacket, or SLIGHT water damage, but over-all itâ?TMs still a good book at a great price! (if it is supposed to contain a CD or access code, that may be missing)

The legend of Orrin Porter Rockwell grows with each telling. Accordingly I have read nearly everything I could find about the man. I just completed all four volumes of "The Porter Rockwell Chronicles" by Mr. Dewey, including Volume 3, and found the story well researched and riveting.

However, I had to give the series only 3 stars because every one of the books is riddled with more typos and malapropisms than the bullet holes found in the corpses of Porter Rockwell's alleged victims! Mr. Dewey either needs to tune up his act or at least fire his proofreaders.

Dewey's writing style also continually strays from Rockwell's period to modern expressions like "freaky," "stoned out of his mind," and, my favorite, "Just hypothetically speaking..." It's a well-known fact that Rockwell couldn't read so a scenario with him using words like "hypothetically" was a bit hard to swallow. I don't mind a little creative license but have to draw the line when it comes to expressions that would have been totally bizarre and misunderstood if expressed in Rockwell's day.

Still a great story. If you don't mind chewing through the gristle of the terrible writing then go for it. If not, check out Harold Schindler's excellent biography, "Orrin Porter Rockwell: Man of God, Son of Thunder" or Dewey's own excellent biography of Porter Rockwell.

Porter is a character that everyone should get to know, he was complex but then simplistic in his view at life.
He saw things with clarity in a very tumultious time, but he also walked his talk and owned it.

From other sources that I have read from I found this work to be a factual accurate account of Porter Rockwell's life, even though at times, you're not sure how Richard Lloyd Dewey could know Porter's feelings for the moment. I think it was because of these personal details and Porter's struggles that I enjoyed the book that much more.

I stated in the above paragraph how I enjoyed all four volumes of this set. I hated to finish them up. Being a Utahn, there's so much to say about Porter Rockwell. A flamboyant, colorful personage.
