Book Description

February 21, 2012
New York Times bestselling author Pamela Redmond delivers a beautifully written novel about three generations of women in New York City and the experiences that shape and connect them to each other.

The Possibility of You weaves together three interlocking stories involving three women dealing with issues of pregnancy and motherhood at key moments in history of the last century: On the brink of the First World War and the dawn of the modern age; as the liberalism of the ’60s and ’70s gave way to Reagan’s 1980s; and during the autumn of Barack Obama’s election. Contemporary heroine Cait, an African-American journalist raised by white adoptive parents, goes on a search for her birth mother inspired by her own unplanned pregnancy. Orphan Billie travels from her hippie upbringing in San Francisco to discover the upscale New York grandmother she never knew existed. And Irish nanny Bridget loses the boy she cares for and loves in the 1916 polio epidemic, only to try and replace him with a child of her own.

Delving into the complex emotions that lie at the heart of unplanned pregnancy, motherhood, and the definition of family, this sweeping inter-generational saga illuminates the struggles of these very different women—and shows how the search for belonging is a connection that remains universal.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Deeply satisfying and enjoyable and juicy. I loved the characters, loved the history, and felt like I was absorbed in a world that I didn't want to let go." - Peggy Orenstein, New York Times Magazine columnist and author of CINDERELLA ATE MY DAUGHTER

"Every mother, daughter, wife, and friend will love this novel about women's lives across the generations: their passions, their challenges, their unbreakable bonds.  A gift to savor for yourself and to share with every woman you know."-- Dorothea Benton Frank, New York Times bestselling author of FOLLY BEACH: A LOWCOUNTRY TALE.

“Seamlessly weaving the present with the past, THE POSSIBILITY OF YOU is an exploration of love and family, of race and relationships that combines the best elements of a family saga with an intricate, Chinese box of a mystery story. Complex and compelling and compulsively readable."

- Geraldine Brooks, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of PEOPLE OF THE BOOK

4.0 out of 5 stars Engaging and Poignant May 24, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Interweaving the stories of three women dealing with unplanned pregnancies in three different eras, The Possibility of You by Pamela Redmond is not just a story but a history of female reproductive rights. As the mother of five children and a strong believer in life, I read this novel with my heart in my throat. It's difficult to read the sometimes callous thoughts about the unborn. However, Redmond treats the emotions and decisions of these women with dignity and respect.

Combining the stories of Bridget, an Irish nanny working in New York City in 1916; Billie, an orphan from California in 1976 and Cait, a journalist in the present day, the novel discusses the variety of emotions facing a young woman on the cusp of motherhood.

Most importantly, Redmond crafts a well written, engaging and poignant story of three sympathetic, though sometimes unwise, characters that make decisions and suffer consequences. It's about family and the ties that bind us. It's about healing, redemption and hope for a greater future.

Format:Paperback
Known for her line of baby-naming books as well as numerous light-and-fluffy novels and a witty "How Not To" about growing old gracefully (HOW NOT TO ACT OLD), bestselling author Pamela Redmond has suddenly switched gears to pen a book that's serious to its core. Told from three different interlinked characters' perspectives, THE POSSIBILITY OF YOU tackles the myriad questions women face regarding pregnancy --- whether or not to have children, give them up for adoption, or abort them. As one might suspect with any book of this ilk, there is much hand-wringing and soul-searching to be had, and, as in life, not everything --- or everyone --- turns out okay in the end, especially the children.

The story opens in the present day, as Cait --- an attractive 30-something freelance writer with no real home base, and Martin --- a late 40s, roguishly handsome reporter on assignment for the New York Times, meet while covering a story on the disappearance of a five-year-old boy. Despite the ring on Martin's finger, Cait and Martin's forbidden attraction quickly evolves into a raunchy one-night-stand, leaving both parties feeling bewildered but sufficiently smitten. Upon returning to New York, they vow to go their separate ways --- Martin, back to his wife and family; Cait, off to Africa to pursue another story lead --- until the inevitable happens: Cait learns she's unexpectedly pregnant.

Meanwhile, it's 1976. Nineteen-year-old Billie and Jupe --- her African-American, closeted-gay, soon-to-be semi-boyfriend, best-friend --- are cleaning out her newly-deceased deadbeat father's rental cottage in San Francisco when Billie stumbles upon a box of old letters stuffed under a bed.

This is an excellent book about the many forms of a mother's love, populated with women whose lives impact one another's across generations and span the continent. It's hard to say who I loved and cared about more: Cait the journalist who's trying to figure out her place in today's world; Billie, who's discovering deep family secrets; or poor Bridget, an Irish nursemaid looking for love and family in NYC circa 1916. The author brings each woman alive in her own special place and gives them all heart and soul that carries their stories across time and brings them together in an ending that's part "It's a Wonderful Life" and part "The Hours."

What if we're not who we thought we were? What if our actions change the lives of women we've never met? Is your mother the woman who raises you or the woman who gives you life? These are just a few of the questions THE POSSIBILITY OF YOU asks us to think about deeply. This is most definitely a book to share with sisters, moms, and women friends.

I'm not going to go into what the story is about because there are already plenty of reviews out there that do that for you. I will say that I found the story well written, very riveting, and hard to put down. I think it took me 2-3 days to finish the story, but that was because I couldn't put it down. All the while, I kept having scenes flash through my head of what the story would be like as a movie. IMO, I think that this story translates well from book to movie format (anybody out there want to take it on?). It's a great read, and leaves you (mostly) feeling good at the end. Definitely pick this book up and give it a go :-D

4.0 out of 5 stars Real women, real times... April 21, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
What a beautiful and appropriate title...'The Possibility of You'!

This is the story of three women...Bridget, Billie and Cait...from different generations.

It recounts their loves, lives, children and important decisions. Tying together at different points, the reader can identify their choices in the 'possibility of you' .... each in their own way.

For every woman, this is an inciteful work. Whether you are young and starting out or a graceful knowing senior, you will identify with the times as the chapters veer between their characters.

The story is like real lives and will touch your heart on many levels. You will perhaps understand women's roles more clearly and empathize, grow and nurture.
