Book Description

When members of the early church cried out to God in urgent need, the place shook with the power of their supplication. In this compelling vision for modern-day supplication, Bill Gothard recognizes the key truth that only God's almighty power can rescue His children in times of distress. Using illustrations from Scripture and testimonies from everyday people, Gothard demonstrates the power of crying out -- and how God can shake the world of those who cry out to Him today.

In this slender volume, Bill Gothard reminds the Church of a long-neglected spiritual truth: God wants us to pray with our voices. Gothard points out the myriad of Bible passages that encourage us to cry out audibly, and illustrates the power of doing so with both Bible stories and personal testimonies. He also examines the meaning of many Hebrew words translated "cry" in the Old Testament.

Some have criticized Gothard for teaching that God doesn't hear silent prayer, or claimed that his approach is simply a "formula". In the book, Gothard acknowledges that God hears ALL His children's prayers, spoken or not, but also points out God's special love for the vocal prayer. Such prayer helps produce both the humility and fervency that God delights in, neither one of which is formulaic in the slightest. Gothard also points out reasons why God might not answer our cries (unconfessed sin, for example).

I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to revitalize their prayer life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great key to more powerful praying April 22, 2005
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I can't believe how I missed the truths found in this book all these years. Dr. Gothard shows how over and over the Bible says to "cry out" to God and yet we usually assume it means to simply pray. I have seen in my life and in my wife's life how God answers these cries of prayer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short But Intriguing January 25, 2005
Format:Hardcover
I had resisted reading this book because although I respect Bill Gothard I had disagreed with some of his earlier writings. But this simple, short little book that expresses only a single theme---"God really likes for us to pray aloud to Him"---did end up touching me and encouraging me to be me more vocal in my prayers. "The need to cry out is a humbling reminder of my total inability to accomplish anything significant for God" "To cry out is to expressly acknowledge that the problem I'm facing is greater than the wisdom, ability, or strength I possess." Its only weakness is common to many of Gothard's writings, in that they are long on deducing doctrine from case histories and single verses and short on foundation in reformed systematic theology.

As a Christian counselor who specializes in treating depression, anxiety and anger problems by helping people experience their broken hearts as they are, in the presence of God as He is (my approach is described at scottlownsdale.com), this book has been very helpful, showing my patients how to cry out from their hearts as David does in the psalms. Thanks, Bill Gothard!

5.0 out of 5 stars God's delight in answer to our cries May 28, 2012
Format:Hardcover
The Power of Crying Out: When Prayer Becomes Mighty (LifeChange Books) Bill Gothard's book The Power Of Crying Out drives home a solid point that God not only listens to our intensive cries, but will delight to perform miracles on our behalf when we recognize, through humility, that God is our true and only source. He lovingly allows circumstances to arise with no solution until we begin to cry out. Our fervent prayers become a sweet aroma as it testifies we have faith in Him.
The Power Of Crying Out will give accounts of miracles that occurred in people's lives and use biblical illustrations to prove God's response in answer to a heart that cries out to Him. The Holy Spirit inspires us to cry out and when our heart acts in obedience we can be assured God will hear what He initiated in us. This is not to discount silent prayers, for indeed He can and does answer as well, but it does point out that our intensive loud cry can activate faith in us while God proves His might in our lives.
This book, if applied wholeheartedly, will change the way you look at prayer and your expectations will rise from the proven faithfulness of God. It is our bold cries that will also urge us to testify and share the gospel with others. You will also read about areas we deal with that can block our cries from reaching God. It's sad but true that people do in fact perish for lack of knowledge as the Word indicates. Some scales will be removed off of all of our eyes- even seasoned Christians- and we will come away refreshed, enlightened, and full of vigor to renew our petitions to God with ongoing belief that miracles and divine reversals await us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Need a Break Through In Your Prayer Life? June 28, 2007
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I am so glad that I found this book, cause it has certainly helped me. It has been a source of inspiration and teaching in many ways. I especially enjoyed how the author, Bill Gothard, goes into the original meanings of Hebrew in reference to different prayers. It has helped me to understand the conflict in my own spirit in times when prayer seems difficult to express, and supplied me with scriptural tools to break through. This book will remain on my shelf of prized books forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Iv'e Read The Book December 9, 2004
Format:Hardcover
And it is well worth the purchase price. Reading the book gave me, number one, a renewed burst of prayer gumption. Secondly, a deeper understanding of God's love for our fellowship, communication, and humility.

Lastly, a better sense of how to take my frustrations, fears, and anxieties to God with a proper attitude. Buy it, read it.
