5.0 out of 5 stars Their Time Has Come May 6, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Juana Bordas has written a critically important book that should be compulsory reading for any and every leader in the United States. Bordas has a deep and comprehensive appreciation of the value of the cultural norms of Latino leadership. In this book, she draws on interviews and examples of outstanding Latino leaders to describe the values, qualities and nuances of Latino leadership that would be well embraced in any organization. Not only to leverage the value of a Latino workforce, be they colleagues or direct reports, but to balance the non-inclusive, "I" culture of most US organizations - an orientation that overlooks the gains to be realized with a more inclusive, "we" orientation. An inspiring read and invaluable in creating a more inclusive and ultimately successful organization.

Juana Bordas has written a fascinating and thorough reveiw of Latino Leadership in her powerful new book, The Power of Latino Leadership: 10 Principles of Inclusion, Community, and Contribution. It is a must read for anyone who is currently a leader or someone who aspires to become a leader in our multicultural world. While many of the basic principles of leadership apply to all people, the uniqueness of the Latino culture and values add a new dimension to understanding how to lead this growing segment of the American population. She shares the values she personally observed and participated in as a leader herself, focusing on the need for a new openness and understanding for success in becoming an effective leader. A leader must be flexible in embracing the changes that are happening in this country as more and more Latino leaders emerge to serve in all leadership venues. Congratulations to Juana Bordas for her tremendous effort in bringing forth these strong tenets of Latino leadership in such a clear and precise manner. They are understandable and applicable, with their focus on inclusion and opportunities for personal growth, so we can all move forward on our own personal leadership journey. Felicidades!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Affirmational Perspective on Latino Leadership July 29, 2013
Format:Paperback
This book doesn't just tolerate or simply accept my Latino heritage: it affirms it. I have as Ph.D. in Educational Leadership, and this is the only leadership book I have ever read that has spoken to me personally and touched me so deeply that I now carry this book around with me. Since I've read it, there is rarely a meeting I attend, a paper I write, or a presentation I deliver where I don't look for the bits of wisdom in this book. This book also provides me with courage in my own Latino Leadership, something that can't be understated for a Mexican-American like myself who is the first person in my family to have graduated from college.

This book turns leadership on its head, thinking about leadership from a Latino perspective that is different than "traditional" views on leadership in the United States. Latino leadership is "we" focused, collective, communal, inclusive, diverse, dynamic, and focused on experience, people and emotions. "Traditional" leadership is individualistic, exclusive, and focused on outcomes. This is a perfect book for both people who are only beginning to explore what it means to be a Latino leader as well as people (like me) who put this on a shelf next to Freire and Anzaldua. I would also recommend this book to anyone who leads a team or organization that includes Latinos, or serves Latino communities. Working in an organization that is mostly White, I am pushing many This is simply a fantastic read that is sure to open many hearts, minds, and conversations for anyone who strives to embrace multiculturalism and diversity.

4.0 out of 5 stars Salsa as well as Ketchup November 13, 2013
By RC
Format:Paperback
It is hard to imagine a follow-up comparable to Juana Bordas's groundbreaking Salsa, Soul and Spirit but here it is.

Bordas has worked for decades in the development of leadership in communities on the social margins and on the margins of corporate communities. She understands the unrecognized values of marginalized groups and the unrecognized needs of those who occupy the mainstream. She writes with the full knowledge that the field of leadership studies is primarily a white, male enclave and as a consequence inadequate for the challenges we face now and will face. She informs us of the characteristics of Latino leadership, in an idealized fashion, that can provide us a path out of the box canyon of corporate leadership for profit and political leadership for power. In their place, she suggests a path of purpose, inclusion and contribute. Our recipes for success will increasingly call for more than ketchup. They will require salsa and numerous other condiments and ingredients that various groups bring to the kitchen.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if we began to understand leadership as Jackie Reed a community organizer in Chicago defined it. "Leadership provides the opportunity for others to give their gifts; to contribute to community." Bordas provides us a way forward with the caveat that this is culture we are talking about and change does not come easy.
