1.0 out of 5 stars Highly Abridged Edition September 7, 2005
Format:Hardcover
This micro edition of the famous book measures 2.76" wide by 3.29" tall and with only 128 pages must be no more than 11% of the full text of "The Power of Positive Thinking." So where does Amazon.com mention this epic shortcoming in the description? Buyer beware, I guess. Very disappointing.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing version December 13, 2005
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is not the original Power of Positive Thinking book that I was expecting. This is a tiny, pocket-sized abridged version. I did not see that mentioned anywhere in the description, but maybe I just overlooked it. Anyway, I was extremely disappointed because I wanted the original version to give as a gift to a friend. This tiny version has very little information in it. Find the original version if you can. It will change your life.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a book for non-Christians March 18, 2007
By Ember
Format:Hardcover
The power of positive thinking and strong intentions is well-known and documented, and this short book does indeed offer some strategies for using these techniques. However, the book's primary focus is on establishing a relationship with Jesus Christ, and the author's attitude seems to be that the success of positive thinking hinges on that relationship.

I don't want to sound anti-Christian, but the powers of intention and the law of attraction are enough on their own to give all the results you could ever want or need. A belief in a specific deity or religion are completely unnecessary. Although Peale probably didn't know it at the time of original publication, the law of attraction is a scientific concept, not a religious one. Also, it's rather contradictory to tell someone that they have the power within to accomplish anything, but they need Jesus to do so. Either you have the power or you don't - Jesus has nothing to do with it. (And you DO have the power!)

If you are a Christian, I'm certain that the ideas in this book will resonate. And more power to you! But for those of us who are not, the book comes across as extremely preachy and outdated. There are many better choices on the same topic that don't have some mention of Jesus Christ on 90% of their pages.

(In the interest of full disclosure, I want to add that while I am not a Christian, I DO believe in God. I find it offensive, frankly, that people assume a belief in a deity means one is a Christian, and I want to make it clear that there are more options than just Christianity and atheism!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Celebrate 50 Years and Add 2002 Updated Strategies November 26, 2002
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
Yes, it was 1952, a full 50 years ago that NVP published his first edition of The Power of Positive Thinking. A true cultural pioneer, he launched a movement in PMA = Positive Mental Attitude, and his original book is still very useful today. NVP's influence in psychology was eventually seen in the cognitive therapy revolution. One additional improvement began in 1986 when academic studies of 'constructive pessimism' appeared in the journal Cognitive Therapy and Research. Now we know that at least half of us can do even better if we supplement The Power of Positive Thinking with The Positive Power of Negative Thinking, published in 2002 by psychologist Julie Norem. With the two books side-by-side, access to both the classic and the updated strategies is at our fingertips. So I recommend combining the foundation and the update to achieve constructive thinking and better living as we begin this 21st Century.

1.0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware - It's a Mini-Book January 28, 2004
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I thought I was buying a full sized "hardcover" edition of this book. When it arrived, I was disappointed to find that it was a miniaturized version, approximately 2 x 3 inches. It would make a cute little gift item, but I'm not sure that it contains the entire text of Dr. Peale's book.

Buyer beware! You have to dig down a few levels to get the product details and only there does it describe this book as a miniature version.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, bad package May 22, 2007
By T in GA
Format:Hardcover
Maybe I should have read the details more carefully or something, but let's just say that when I opened my package and saw a miniature little book about the size of a stickey-note pad, I was deflated. Even though I tried not to let that deter me from reading the goodies inside, I'd be lying to say it didn't. My advice: make sure you're ordering a "real" book, one you don't have to squint to read. Don't trust Amazon to do it for you. The first one they show available is the small one. Shame on them. I digress...

On Peale's words, they are not new, but they are profound. The book gets kind-of repetitive early on, but maybe that's the author's point. Bottom line, books don't become "classic" for nothig. Check it out if you feel you need real change in your thought life.

Be postiive!

I did not realize this was such a minature edition. It is difficult to accurately assess this brief synopsis. I would need to read the full version to get the true meaning of this book.
