Look Younger, Be Healthier, and Experience a New Kind of Energy

Sluggishness. Boredom. Lack of concentration. Too many of us pour another cup of coffee and accept fatigue as the inevitable side effect of hectic lives. Dr. Matthew Edlund shows us there is a better way. (and it's not just sleeping more!)

This groundbreaking program will rewire your body, improving your productivity, creativity, and sense of well-being. Experience the extraordinary benefits—including dramatically decreased stress and increased energy—of the four types of rest:

  • Physical: From deep breathing to the "UnNap," learn how to vanquish stress in seconds.
  • Mental: Practice key strategies of relaxed concentration, and marvel at how much more you can accomplish.
  • Social: See how even walking to lunch with a coworker creates a new sense of security and support.
  • Spiritual: Experience a connection to something greater than the self, the key to internal balance.

The Power of Rest introduces one powerful technique each day, many of which can be accomplished in a minute or less. Rediscover the feeling of being truly alert and engaged with your body, your work, and the people you love.

More About the Author

Dr. Matthew Edlund, M.D., M.O.H., is The Rest Doctor (@therestdoctor.com,) and Director of the Center for Circadian Medicine in Sarasota, Florida. A former professor at Brown and the University of Texas Medical Schools and an internationally recognized expert on sleep and biological clocks, his clinical and research work led him to recognize that rest is Regeneration, the way the body rebuilds, renews, and rewires itself. Rest is critical to health, survival, pleasure and performance. It is powerfully influenced by what we do, including the active rest techniques developed by Dr. Edlund, and the thousands of different rest techniques civilizations have created through the ages to refresh and renew body and spirit. Active Rest can be done rapidly anywhere, anytime, and can advance health by setting a rhythm to one's day and life.
Dr. Edlund's previous books include Designed to Last, The Body Clock Advantage, and Psycholgical and Mental Illness. He invites everyone to join the Rest Community on Facebook, so that others can describe the rest techniques they use to enjoy their lives.

I dont generally like books that prescribe any X day or Y week plan. However, as a 40+ highly strung male badly lack of sleep and rest, I am obliged to compliment this for its well structured, practical and helpful advice. In short, recommended.

p.s. Below please find some of my favorite passages for your reference.
That small slip on the curb damaged cells in the anterior cruciate ligament of your knee. Inflammatory cells race over, signaling nearby connective tissue cells to start gearing up to divide. They will make new cells to replace those lost. Your walk invigorated leg muscles, many of which start to grow new actin and myosin proteins, which will make your muscles stronger and quicker. Pg11
Once you get up out of bed, stay up. Use your natural wake time as the time you wake each and every day. Stick to it, whether it's warm or cold, spring or fall, weekend or weekday. If you need extra sleep during the weekend, try to get it during afternoon naps. To make your life rhythmic, get rhythmic. Fitting you and your life to your body's innate rhythms will give you new ways to rest and relax, concentrate, and think. With time, you should also find new sources of energy.
Sleep does all this through literally rebuilding and rebalancing the cells of your body and their interactions. Without sleep you don't make new brain cells. Without sleep you don't lay down memories. In sleep, you produce growth hormone, recontouring and refiguring your body. Pg74
Five breaths open the gateway to physical rest:-
First breath: With your mouth closed, take a deep breath in. Feel your belly rise outward as you breathe inward. Now breathe out, slowly. Gradually but firmly push the air out of your lungs, feeling it flow across your nostrils and back out into the atmosphere.

Why are all the reviews from this book from the same time span, by people who have only this one review in their histories? (There are only two people who have made more than one review -- one of them also wrote a review for another book by the same author.)

I live with sleep apnea, like sever, I stop breathing 56 times an hour without a C-Pap machine. So a book like this was of great interest to me. I knew a little about the subject because of my apnea problem and this book is filled with wonderful information on the subject of rest and what it does for us. I gave it a 3 because it is only a 5 in my opinion if you are a student of this sort of thing. I found it at many times being an answer for rest in that it put me to sleep. That is not to say it doesnt have value. Like I said it is jam packed with what seems to be very valid information. In my opinion way too much information and too little on the how do I get something that I can apply to my life information. It is in here but you better be a sleuth to find it buried in the book. For information it is a 5, for usability it is a 3 and for readability it is a 1.

Wow, what a book. I didn't know rest could do so much for me. This is a whole new way of looking at the body. Rest is an active process, according to Dr. Edlund, which we can use to relax and revive us when we're stressed, and power us up when we're exhausted. If you put different rest techniques together, you can build new brain cells, restore your body, get healthy, even look younger.

The techniques are quick. They're also easy to use. I really like some of the spiritual rest techniques, because they really relax me and get me to see the bigger picture. Combining them is even better. I like that it's best to put together active rest techniques to make the day more rhythmic, not racing through the day, but pacing the day. Using FAR (Food-Activity-Rest) is also an easy way to lose weight and get healthy.
I really recommend this book. It can change the way you live.

I am a full time teacher, mother, wife, and friend. I, like most people, constantly feel TIRED. The book summary, Power of Rest, had me interested in any techniques I could practice to make my day feel a little less exhausting. I will say, I think this author is obviously very intelligent, knowledgable, and even offers some good suggestions (ie. less technology, more routine). The reason I gave this book a one star rating is because it just seemed to drag on and on and on. The content alone will make you sleepy out of boredom. For example, the author suggests "read before bed" as part of the nighttime routine. Then he gives page after page of scientific research, the time you can read, the types of books you could read, where you could sit to read, why you should read before bed as long as it `isn't too interesting', and why reading will help you sleep....on and on and on. Further, a few of the suggestions are just unrealistic for your average working person. I don't think I can practice sex during the day, self hypnosis, napping, and yoga poses with a class full of busy kindergarten students. This book could have really been condensed, sold for less, and made to be more effective for "busy" consumers. This book just wasn't a good fit for me. I suggest one search the internet for energy tips first, but not right before bed (keeping you awake too long).
