Imagine feeling restored . . . refreshed . . . renewed

Too many of us accept sluggishness and fatigue as the inevitable side effects of hectic lives—but Dr. Matthew Edlund shows us there is a better way. After years of clinical research and consultations with hundreds of patients, he realized that many people aren't just sleep-deprived, they're rest-deprived. Our hearts, minds, and central nervous systems are overloaded, and we've long forgotten the feeling of being truly refreshed.

The Power of Rest is the much-needed antidote to our frenetic modern pace. Dr. Edlund has identified four crucial types of active rest—physical, mental, social, and spiritual—to create a groundbreaking 30-day rest makeover program that fits easily into even the busiest schedules. The benefits of making time for active rest have proven extraordinary: by using the body's unique power to restore and renew itself, you can look younger, lose weight more effectively, and experience greater joy in your work and relationships.

We would never expect our bodies to function without food. How can we expect to feel fully fueled and alert without intelligent, directed rest? This step-by-step plan introduces one simple, enjoyable technique each day—many of which can be accomplished in a minute or less and can easily be incorporated into your life. Learn to tap into these powerful techniques that quickly lead you to a healthier, more successful, more relaxed life.

More About the Author

Dr. Matthew Edlund, M.D., M.O.H., is The Rest Doctor (@therestdoctor.com,) and Director of the Center for Circadian Medicine in Sarasota, Florida. A former professor at Brown and the University of Texas Medical Schools and an internationally recognized expert on sleep and biological clocks, his clinical and research work led him to recognize that rest is Regeneration, the way the body rebuilds, renews, and rewires itself. Rest is critical to health, survival, pleasure and performance. It is powerfully influenced by what we do, including the active rest techniques developed by Dr. Edlund, and the thousands of different rest techniques civilizations have created through the ages to refresh and renew body and spirit. Active Rest can be done rapidly anywhere, anytime, and can advance health by setting a rhythm to one's day and life.
Dr. Edlund's previous books include Designed to Last, The Body Clock Advantage, and Psycholgical and Mental Illness. He invites everyone to join the Rest Community on Facebook, so that others can describe the rest techniques they use to enjoy their lives.

Rest is so much more vital and alive and desirable when I read about it the passionate way Dr. Edlund describes it.

It would be easy to praise the book just after reading it, because the exercises sound interesting and helpful, but I can assure you that they actually work!
Irek Sipowicz-Hicks
Rest is an active process, according to Dr. Edlund, which we can use to relax and revive us when we're stressed, and power us up when we're exhausted.

Wow, what a book. I didn't know rest could do so much for me. This is a whole new way of looking at the body. Rest is an active process, according to Dr. Edlund, which we can use to relax and revive us when we're stressed, and power us up when we're exhausted. If you put different rest techniques together, you can build new brain cells, restore your body, get healthy, even look younger.

The techniques are quick. They're also easy to use. I really like some of the spiritual rest techniques, because they really relax me and get me to see the bigger picture. Combining them is even better. I like that it's best to put together active rest techniques to make the day more rhythmic, not racing through the day, but pacing the day. Using FAR (Food-Activity-Rest) is also an easy way to lose weight and get healthy.
I really recommend this book. It can change the way you live.

Why are all the reviews from this book from the same time span, by people who have only this one review in their histories? (There are only two people who have made more than one review -- one of them also wrote a review for another book by the same author.)

During the years of treating clients with muscle pain, I have come to respect the need for sleep and rest in order to have healthy muscle function. But I never had a concise strategy to teach my patients, that is, until now. Dr. Matthew Edlund's newest book, The Power of Rest, is the "tool" I recommend to every one I treat because he presents a plan that is easily understood and easily put into practice. It results in helping people gain appreciation and understanding of their body's need for different types of rest: physical, mental, social and spiritual. The results become obvious to those who practice what Dr. Edlund teaches. I highly recommend everyone read this book and take 30 days to "do" a "rest makeover" with the techniques he explains, going from overloaded to rest-intelligent.

I am a full time teacher, mother, wife, and friend. I, like most people, constantly feel TIRED. The book summary, Power of Rest, had me interested in any techniques I could practice to make my day feel a little less exhausting. I will say, I think this author is obviously very intelligent, knowledgable, and even offers some good suggestions (ie. less technology, more routine). The reason I gave this book a one star rating is because it just seemed to drag on and on and on. The content alone will make you sleepy out of boredom. For example, the author suggests "read before bed" as part of the nighttime routine. Then he gives page after page of scientific research, the time you can read, the types of books you could read, where you could sit to read, why you should read before bed as long as it `isn't too interesting', and why reading will help you sleep....on and on and on. Further, a few of the suggestions are just unrealistic for your average working person. I don't think I can practice sex during the day, self hypnosis, napping, and yoga poses with a class full of busy kindergarten students. This book could have really been condensed, sold for less, and made to be more effective for "busy" consumers. This book just wasn't a good fit for me. I suggest one search the internet for energy tips first, but not right before bed (keeping you awake too long).

I live with sleep apnea, like sever, I stop breathing 56 times an hour without a C-Pap machine. So a book like this was of great interest to me. I knew a little about the subject because of my apnea problem and this book is filled with wonderful information on the subject of rest and what it does for us. I gave it a 3 because it is only a 5 in my opinion if you are a student of this sort of thing. I found it at many times being an answer for rest in that it put me to sleep. That is not to say it doesnt have value. Like I said it is jam packed with what seems to be very valid information. In my opinion way too much information and too little on the how do I get something that I can apply to my life information. It is in here but you better be a sleuth to find it buried in the book. For information it is a 5, for usability it is a 3 and for readability it is a 1.

As a fairly high-strung individual, I suffer frequently from anxiety and sleeplessness that both contribute to general tiredness. Dr. Edlund's book suggests straightforward and practical steps to employ different forms of rest as an antidote to the hectic demands of the modern world. The program Dr. Edlund outlines is of course not a panacea, but I have already detected considerable improvement in my general well-being by following many of his suggestions.

Matthew Edlund is a good writer and his latest book, too, is well written; because of that, reading about and learning how to rest is easy and fun. But of course the most important thing is what he suggests as the Plan, and that Plan is fantastic. It works on several levels. For me it had a "side effect" of significantly diminishing my depression. It would be easy to praise the book just after reading it, because the exercises sound interesting and helpful, but I can assure you that they actually work! I tried them all, chose my favorite (like the auto-hypnosis or super hot showers, to name just a couple) and perform them regularly. It's easy to do: they are short, fun, and most of them effective immediately. I am glad that Edlund raised the subject. I think Americans--always working, always rushing somewhere--simply forgot how to rest.
