From the Back Cover

In today’s modern world of convenience and comfort, suffering can seem senseless. This idea has even crept into the church, where many believe that if we make the right choices and do the right things, pain can be avoided. So it’s little wonder that when do encounter tough situations, we face even tougher questions: Why does God allow suffering? Where is God when I’m hurting?

The Power of Suffering takes an in-depth, honest look at the reality of pain and hurt in the life of a believer. Filled with rich Biblical truths and fresh insights, this study explores how God ultimately uses suffering for good in the lives of His children, and offers encouragement and hope for the heavy heart.

Includes a guide for both personal and group study and features discovery questions, suggestions for prayer, and activities, all designed to connect life-changing truths with everyday living.

There is no doubt that suffering is one of the hardest topics there are to think and talk about. It is a subject that makes us uncomfortable and many times we want to avoid it. In the Christian's life, however, this subject is one that should be seriously pondered upon. As witnesses of light to a darkened world it is important that we know what God has said in His Word about this subject. Many non-Christians (and some Christians) struggle with the question of why a loving and all-powerful God would "allow" suffering to occur on the earth and this is one reason why some people reject the Gospel. Christians should be knowledgeable about what the Bible says on this topic in order to proclaim God`s truth revealed to us in His Scripture and in order to be strong witnesses who are pleasing to Him. In addition, it is important that Christians know what God has said about suffering in His Word because He wants us to know about it: "All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work."--2 Timothy 3:16-17. Not knowing what He has revealed to us in Scripture about this topic is crippling to a Christian's faith and leaves us unprepared for trials, persecutions and sufferings.

This book is wonderful and challenging. At the beginning of the book, MacArthur writes about how suffering is in the plan of God (Isaiah 45:7, see also Deuteronomy 32:39, 1 Samuel 2: 6-8 ) and he provides several reasons why He sends trials, sufferings and persecutions into our lives. Some of these reasons include:

1. To test the validity of what believers profess.
2. To test the strength of our faith.
3. To humble us.
4.

This book is so chalked full of powerful messages that give fantastic understanding to why there is suffering in God's world, that I feel there is not a soul on earth who would not be able to take away something helpful from this book. Macarthur is outlines his messages in a very comprehensible way.

For me to read this when I was going through a rough spell, it was OK. The author dwells on the fact that suffering can be good for us. NOT a good book to read, if a bad situation has just occurred. We can't always see to the other side of our issues....sometimes they tend to drag on....and although I appreciate the fact that suffering can and does lead to something better, (the whole, "when God closes a door, He opens a window" thing) to expound on this fact for a whole book does get to be a bit much!

If you are looking at reviews. You should invest in all MacArthurs books. He provides valuable learning from scripture. If you ever wanted to go to seminary. I would suggest reading MacArthur books. He provides just as much knowledge as a classroom professor.

I would recommend this book to any believer who is/has/will (so everyone) go through trials and suffering. John MacArthur does a great job at staying Biblically solid AND making it easy to read/understand. You will not regret buying this book as it is such a valuable tool to help a believer push through the difficulties of this fallen world. I have found GREAT encouragement by reading this book - I would give it more than five stars if possible!

Dr. MacArthur addresses the topic of suffering from a biblical perspective. Suffering is a reality for Christians and non Christians.

It is important to notice that the author assumes the position of suffering that comes as a result of honoring and serving Christ. Nevertheless, it is very useful to understand how to handle every kind of suffering that comes into our life.

Notice: At the end of the book you will find a reading guide with questions and advice how to take the most out of this book. Please take a look at that before you start reading it. You will greatly benefit from it.

I highly recommend this book and I'm planning to read it again (following the reading guide located at the end of it).
