This easy-to-read work presents instructions, anecdotes, and the findings from many fields to bypass the self-limiting notion that creativity only falls to geniuses and artists. He helps us find ways to interrupt the behavior patterns that have crept upon us as we have become properly socialized...This book gives us up to date tools and understanding... --Clinical psychologist and author Sylvia Lafair PhD

Galindo lays out some positive motivation for embracing creative thought that aren't threats to our bio-demands and that actually reassure the logic process that `different' can enhance our health and safety...Instead of spelling out a hackneyed formula that's just like other's you've seen, Javy Galindo takes readers on a journey through foreign and exotic terrain... --Book Review by Deborah Adams from Curled up With a Good Book

Galindo clearly explains the roots of creativity in the brain and how to overcome one's own blockages and obstacles in order to...reach a higher state of personal satisfaction. While this book should appeal to those in business, government and science, it can equally benefit all persons who go about their lives looking to make their personal islands a bit more interesting and productive. --Book Review by Susan Reimers from BestSellersWorld.com

(The book) is designed to help readers get a new perspective on just about anything...Readers should be warned to be ready for change. --Book Review by Darragh Doiron, The Port Arthur News

About the Author

Javy Wong Galindo, M. Eng., is a self-proclaimed creative dimwit who is working real hard to become better. This former electrical engineer and performance arts teacher has over 13 years of experience providing creative consultation. He is available for lectures, workshops, and interviews. Contact him through his website, www.Thinking-Differently.com. Javy's interests in thinking differently began the first time he answered a question incorrectly on a test, which occurred early and often in his childhood. As a youth, he developed a passion for storytelling, creative writing, sketch comedy, and performed in various instrumental music ensembles. This affinity for creative endeavors naturally led him to a decade long career working in a cubicle as an electrical engineer. He holds both a master's and bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from UC San Diego with minors in philosophy and music theory. While working as an engineer for companies such as Motorola and Northrop Grumman, Javy participated in various corporate creativity workshops. At the same time, he continued to feed his creative hungers by being an educator for several southern California non-profit youth arts organizations and as a San Diego high school music instructor. In 2007, Javy took a hiatus from his engineering career to pursue an academic investigation of the creative process at JFK University in Pleasant Hill. When he's not speaking on creativity, Javy can be found singing at a club, performing bad comedy improv, writing an unfunny comedy sketch, or running poorly on an uphill trail. 5.0 out of 5 stars Life Changing August 5, 2009
Format:Paperback
I work in the medical field and love taking care of others. Recently I've decided to go back to school to pursue a higher degree but have been in conflict with balancing work and school. Having been out of college for several years, school work seems more challenging than I remember. I was having doubts regarding whether or not my goal was attainable when I decided to attend one of the author's workshops. The workshop was great so I bought the book and it has completely changed the way I look at problems I encounter. It taught me how to reframe the obstacles I encounter in school, work and in life! The author changed my whole perspective! I definitely recommend this book to others who feel like they're not living the life they have always envisioned for themselves

3.0 out of 5 stars Starts Off Well, but Doesn't Go Far Enough January 13, 2012
Format:Paperback
I'm of two minds about this book: on the one hand, it provides an excellent primer on how creative thinking works. Bringing in influences from neuroscience, art, psychology, literature, and other sources, Galindo explains a remarkably solid framework of how we come to think in lock step, and why people who break that pattern succeed in business, art, and life. As a survey of thought discoveries, this book works well.

On the other hand, Galindo takes a remarkably long time to get into the mechanics of nonconforming thought. Though he does a remarkable job of the "what" and the "why," his "how" doesn't start until after page 150, and even then is pretty scanty. It's easy to say that we should "reframe," "mix & match," or "be a little nutty"; it's a different order of beast to actually help us achieve these goals.

On balance, Galindo's framework is engaging and entertaining. But his praxis leaves a lot to be desired. He says little you can't find in works by writers like Edward de Bono or, to a lesser degree, Oliver Sacks. I recommend Galindo's book if you need to understand, or persuade others, of why creative thought and innovative insight matter. But keep shopping if you want a guide to put these principles into practice.
