About the Author

Frank Fradella is the author of more than a dozen books, including those in the Valley of Shadows series, Swan Song, and The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Drawing Basics (Alpha Books) -- which he also illustrated. He is the founder and president of iHero Entertainment, whose groundbreaking illustrated prose magazine, Cyber Age Adventures, won numerous awards including the Writer's Digest Grand Prize and the P & E Award for Best Fiction Magazine (2004). iHero reassembled its original creators to bring a new superhero magazine ("I, Hero") to market in 2010. Frank has also done work in comics, including Gene Simmons House of Horrors for IDW. Frank is the creator of two successful tarot decks, both published by U.S. Games Systems, Inc.. In the Fradella Adventure Tarot, he teamed with artist JP Dupras to create a deck featuring the heroes and villains of the iHero Universe, creating the world’s first complete superhero tarot deck. He also teamed with the late Jeziel Sanchez Martinez to create the breathtaking Undersea Tarot.

I read the ePub version of this book on my Nook, where I picked it up for 99 cents. This is one of the best written pieces of superhero prose that I've read -- and I've read just about everything out there. Fradella is an excellent storyteller and has put together some fantastic stories. My one complaint is there isn't a huge amount of overlap in the characters - the majority of the stories featured new heroes and situations, which kept me from fully bonding or relating to any one of them more than the others. I might have preferred if there were more linkage or recurring characters from story to story.

Aside from that minor quibble, I really enjoyed "The Power Within" and hope Fradella puts together more work like this. Great fun, especially if you can get it for that awesome 99 cent price...I'd have been fine paying 3-4 times as much for the book.

A well written and engaging look into the iHero Universe shows us how heroes live in the perspective of human nature. Fradella and his partners spins a yarn that is fascinating and full of the superhero bravado we've all grown up with. His perspective relies on the human element though, fully exploring all the emotions and facets that come with human condition and frailty. This book relies on imagination as well; there are no pictures, no drawings. A bold and daring decision for this kind of storytelling, but it's pulled off with great ease and skill. A good read for anyone.
