Editorial Reviews

Lavish eight CD box set from the acclaimed guitarist, producer, singer and songwriter, released to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the beginning of Nelson's recording career. This is the most extensive and detailed anthology of Bill's astoundingly creative career to date. Over the past four decades Bill has consistently proved himself to be one of Britain's most original and creative musicians, exploring an astonishing diversity of musical styles, consistently pushing musical boundaries and earning the admiration of legions of fans throughout the world and enlightened critics alike. As a guitarist, Bill ranks as a great and uniquely gifted figure, but this eclectic selection of tracks also highlights his work as a singer/songwriter and instrumental composer. The set begins with his earliest recordings and includes previously unreleased material by Be Bop Deluxe, along with examples from Bill's extensive solo catalogue, exploring a wide range of styles. Esoteric.

Bill Nelson is in my top 10 artists/composers and certainly one of the best "unknowns" out of the 70's that still produce music. His career is laid out here, each song chosen to represent a moment, an era or a band long gone but still fresh in the memories of many.
This is a very special set that will really light up your eyes when opening it up for the first time, the packaging is just beautiful and it's production limited, a keeper.

What makes this man's career so interesting is the vast body of work he has produced over the years and the varying content, there is something for everyone, multiple generations of listeners can enjoy any one of the discs in this collection.
Lastly, there is something to be said of a musician that plays all the instruments, sings all of the vocals, writes all of his own music and sells most of it on an obscure website, all in an effort to maintain control of the content, quality and artistry without interference, the results are documented here for you to hear.

This (8)CD Box Set is second to none! There aren't too many artists worthy of a(8)CD Box Set. I've held off on this review because the material is so exhaustive. How does one comment on an artist's forty plus years of creative work? I own all of Bill Nelson's work with Be Bop Deluxe and only a couple albums of his solo material not really caring too much for the spacey "dreamland" material. Well? I change my mind. I love every disc in this box set! My apologies to Mr. Nelson for those missing years that I didn't get "it" - I'm getting it now! In listening to this work I hear so so much - I hear David Bowie - I hear David Byrne - I hear Pink Floyd - I hear Eno - but, most of all I hear Bill Nelson. Can it be possible that this cat has surpassed the creative output of these aforementioned artists? To my ears the answer is YES! With an open mind take a listen - take that trip to Dreamland - you won't be disappointed!

This set is a great retrospective of the career of a singular, creative artist and musician who continues to be prolific in his musical output. I especially like the fact that there are alternate versions and mixes of some of the songs from the Be Bop Deluxe catalog.

First off, this is the most lush, well designed 8cd box set I have ever seen!!! Every conceivable surface (with the exception of the cd play sides) is filled with pix, artwork, commentary, old venue posters (BBD toured with Blue Oyster Cult a lot, cool) and a wild quasi-psychedelic collage abounds everywhere. All this and I haven't even opened the spectacular booklet that's included!!!

I bought this after only some small exposure to Be-Bop Deluxe (BBD) back in 1974. I had no real knowledge of Bill Nelson at all. Wow!
I've had this box set since 2012 and over the years managed to listen, really listen, to all its component parts. Since then I have purchased the 'Futurist Manifesto' BBD set.

Besides the BBD tracks included (@ 27 or so) there is a HUGE amount of solo material. I'll admit that these solo works took me a little time to traverse, as well as appreciate. My first impressions were of the Bowie 'spiders from mars' era. The more I listened the more I saw how Nelson's work was so much more in complexity, lyrics, arrangement and wit. No commercial sell-out here, ever!

This set is now the gem of my various box set collections. And to think that the Jack Bruce 6cd set 'Will You Follow' was classy (it is very very good but design is nowhere near as nice), not to mention Robert Plant's 'Nine Lives' (excellent 'cept for the 9cd holding slats, cumbersome). This one blows them both away!
