5.0 out of 5 stars I recommend this book
This is an honest and encouraging story about a man and his family making a place for themselves from the ground up. The writing is sturdy, sometimes gorgeous, and sometimes funny. I especially loved the parts about the author and his small son traipsing around in nature. It makes me think that building a house and committing to a place is one of the best things a...

No chance to read this book thoroughly. Three Star Rating is provisional. Sampling this book revealed the author to be unique.

Goodrich's narrative of his life and his house reminded me of a classic PBS documentary. PBS documentary was original inasmuch as it showed sequences from a man's existence in the wilderness. This accompanied by voiceovers from the...

4.0 out of 5 stars A realistic look at life, January 15, 2011
This review is from: The Practice of Home : Biography of a House (Hardcover)
"The Practice of Home," could have been titled "The Practice of Life." Charles Goodrich tells us of life, mistakes, small triumphs, and the daily experience of being a normal and therefore imperfect, human. It is a story many of us could write, were we only honest enough.

Here, one learns that freshly cut wood joints are not always perfect, nails perversely bend when one wishes them to go straight, and sometimes the hammer hits the thumb. Along the way, he builds a 720 square foot house, improves it, and builds his life. He meets a woman, marries her, builds a family and is enriched by it.

All the while, he perseveres, writes, and writes some more, improving his craft in the midst of working on his life. We learn of his history, parents, family, and the art of building. By the end of the book, the house has been built and is lived in, the author is older and, one believes, has earned a measure of wisdom and happiness.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Favorite, February 2, 2014

This review is from: The Practice of Home : Biography of a House (Hardcover)
With its eye for arresting detail and images that linger on memory's retina, its tightly crafted sentences, interwoven essays, and self-deprecating humor, The Practice of Home is a splendid read. Charles Goodrich is no dogmatist or peddler of perfected certainties. Although his prose shines, his practice is the practice of (sometimes funky) reality, honesty, gratitude, and willing imperfection -- and so teaches by example rather than proclamation. And the example is one of engagement, observation, study, and sometimes step-by-faltering-step lessons neighbors, family, wood, and the world teach us.

Goodrich's narrative of his life and his house reminded me of a classic PBS documentary. PBS documentary was original inasmuch as it showed sequences from a man's existence in the wilderness. This accompanied by voiceovers from the man's diary.

Charles Goodrich's narrative might be considered to be a sequel to or at least in the same family as the drama aired on PBS.
