The Preparedness Mindset, part 1

A Listmania! list by B. Lent
(REAL NAME)
The list author says: "Important Note: You will not agree with everything presented in these materials. Some of it will offend you, some of it will amuse you, some of it deserves to be ridiculed, and some of it is a product of a specific cultural angst. When looking for information, you usually don’t want to go to someone who treats a subject casually, but an expert or at least one who takes their subject seriously; even if they would be a bore a party and you wouldn’t want to hang out with them. Mull over what they have said, take what you need and politely ignore what you don’t.
Discussion: 99.99% of the disasters your family will encounter will not involve a widespread, government altering, Robert Neville Apocalypse. Instead they will take the form of lost jobs, accidents, medical issues, etc. Be sure you are comfortable with your level of insurance, you have invested in your job skills to the best of your ability, you are fit and that you are taking good medical and dental care of yourself. Start with “normal” things like fire alarms, locks, being current on your vaccinations and having a family communications plan.
Preparedness is a mindset, a lifestyle. It is not an event, collecting stuff or more specifically not preparing for or being paranoid about a “movie plot” event. It is working toward being in a position to not require the assistance of others and being able to provide assistance to others in a time of need. In a widespread disaster there is a real possibility that whatever “stuff” you may have collected will be destroyed in the event; you need to deal with that, without stealing. It incorporates individual responsibility, mental resilience and community compassion. Do NOT be the guy on the news who whines, “All I have is a warm six pack in the fridge and an over the limit credit card, when is the govt. going to come and save me?”"
