Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is an excellent, readable and vigorous translation of The Prince, but it is much more than simply a translation. The map, notes and guide to further reading are crisp, to-the-point and yet nicely comprehensive. The inclusion of the letter to Vettori is most welcome. But, above all, the Introduction is so gripping and lively that it has convinced me to include 'The Prince' in my syllabus for History of Western Civilization the next time that I teach it... Great price, too! And lovely printing and layout." -- Rachel Fulton, University of Chicago. "...lively and readable and makes the pithy, bracing, and forceful aspects of Machiavelli's thought accessible to nonspecialists." -- Michael C. Downs, Indiana University. "The best edition of The Prince that I have ever read. Wooton's translation is lively and easy to read, and his introduction is provocative and engaging." -- Angelo Louisa, University of Nebraska, Omaha. "...readable text in vigorous prose. I have not read a translation of The Prince into English that is more lively..." --J H Hexter, Washington University.

There are lots of translations of Machiavelli's The Prince out there, both in in print and online. I first came across this one in graduate school. After having read it several times since being introduced to it as an undergraduate in different forms (in anthologies, in the Portable Machiavelli, etc.), this happens to be the most accessible one. Its introduction is fairly detailed, so new readers to Political Theory may find it overwhelming, but for those who have some background it presents intriguing ideas.

Wootton's work is splendid. The Introduction amply explains his approach. Eminently readable by a broad audience. I truly enjoyed it.

Format: Paperback
Machiavelli's work came about after the end of his diplomatic career. The contents lay out his reflections on how to rule. He includes such wisdom such as: It is better to be feared than to be loved. He notes two different types of leaders--lions and foxes, and speaks of the implications of each. As he notes in Chapter 18: "A prince must imitate the fox and the lion [and] must be a fox to recognize traps, and a lion to frighten wolves."

There are many interpretations of this work. Is it satire, actually suggesting that a clever, nasty, feared prince is, in fact, likely to fail? Or a handbook for a leader? Or an effort to get in good graces with the powerful so that he could resume his career? Or. . .?

For the era, this is a fascinating work--especially read in juxtaposition with his Discourses. This represents a solid version of this classic work.

Machiavelli's The Prince is genius, not because it tells us how things should be, but because he tells us how things are. Inside The Prince, we gain a view of politics during his lifetime that in honestly still last today. He delves into many issues such as whether it is better for a leader to be loved or feared, and reality vs. perception. This book also leads to discredit the myth that all was well and mighty and just in the good old Renaissance, providing us with a history of what history almost erased.

Probably within my top 5 favorite works of literature written before the 1700s

This is my favorite version of this book. Great read, and sensible if you apply it to what you are seeing today. It is a must read to gain a perspective of politicians in U.S. today. If more people would read it there would be less 'sheep' in our society.

I have bought almost all the these small books, either on campus or here on Amazon. They all contain works from some of the most well know philosophers and give insight on what that certain book focuses on, in this case "The Price". You will hear a lot of theory in this little book, a lot on politics, and how politics from 500 years ago really isn't that much different than it is today. Machiavelli's motives in writing "The Price" are still not fully understood, nor will they ever be. Some believe he was giving the Medici's bad info to speed up their inevitable downfall, some think he was just a joke, and there's also the fact that he was trying to gain employment, particularly with the Medici's. In the end were not really sure. Read it and decide for your self.

I truly believe that getting to know the great minds of the past, and what made them tick is crucial to knowing ones self, and society as a whole. These old men for the most part shaped the world around us today, very bright and intelligent beings, it should be a crime to not educate your self on this important aspect of history.

This book was a great quality and an excellent read! The notes gave a easy way to look things up that were hard to understand.
