Editorial Reviews

Review

"A treasure trove of memorabilia pulled from the movie's archives, it includes reproductions of hundreds of candid Polaroids from the film's production, photos of props and costumes used by the actors, sketches that later became Princess Buttercup's farm... reflections from the all-star cast....Is there a better gift book for the "Princess Bride" fan in your life? Why, that's "inconceivable!"" ~americanprofile.com

"Celebrating the film’s 25th anniversary, a beautiful and exciting look at the making of the film and memorabilia compilation for fans. The Princess Bride: A Celebration is the first companion book to the film ever created. Which in itself is astounding–a movie so popular and yet no one thought to release something like this before. "It is a collector's dream to lay his/her hands on continuity Polaroids from a film production and this book gives the reader the feel...At 192 pages this volume actually includes everything you could hope for. The result is what any fan of any film would love to have" ~Borg.com

"A Celebration
is kind of like a 192-page look-through a Princess Bride shoebox of stuff, like the creators and actors collectively threw bits and pieces from the experience and the process in for safekeeping and reminiscing down the road. ...after getting to the end, I found that I had enjoyed the memories it had sparked, and what I really wanted to do was go sit down with it and flip through again while watching the movie for the bajillionth time. Which is really the best way to celebrate an amazing movie, after all." ~wired.com

"...a super-smart, super-comprehensive collection of creative artifacts related to a beloved film....what’s most astounding here is how the book has been compiled to tell the proverbial behind-the-scenes story of making the film without any unifying main text: to turn the pages of this book...is to both relive the film and to learn, effortlessly, about how it was crafted. Highly recommended…" ~School Library Journal

I adore this movie. When it first came out, I must have seen it 20 times in the theater and dragged everyone I knew to it. We had Rocky Horror style parties where we dressed up as characters and ate stew like the one Fezzik makes for Inigo. We lit lighters when the fireswamp spurted flames. So I have been celebrating the Princess Bride for a long time.

The book: not so much. It contains lots of polaroids from the production that appear to have been used for continuity. They are poorly lit, barely focused and don't add anything to "celebrate" 25 years of this movie. There are some movie stills, publicity shots and a few photos from behind the scenes. The text consists of an introduction by Rob Reiner and an afterword by Norman Lear who produced the movie. There are some pages of the movie script, a few set design images printed on vellum and a series of one-page reminiscences from the cast. There was nothing new there if you have seen the extras on the dvds over the years.

It could have been so much better. Especially at this price. Why not interview the guys who played the ROUSes or Yellin? A note from William Goldman might have been nice. If we are celebrating the movie, why not show its impact on the culture? Where has it been referenced? How many Buttercups and Westleys have trick-or-treated, gone to Comic-Cons or even gotten married?

It may be the only book available, but it's such a disappointment. A children's picture book with shots from the movie would have been a more appealing use of the stills.

For a movie that has lived and thrived for generations, this book does nothing to reflect that energy and appeal. Wait for it to show up in a bargain bin.

This is a nice book for fans. My only real complaint is rather a big one. That is that the pictures, models, and diagrams are not annotated. For example, there is a picture of a prosthetic mask that was to be worn by Peter Falk. Peter Falk doesn't wear prosthetics in this film, so I am confused about why that was made. Why include it in the book if we have no idea why it's there. Was Miracle Max originally to be played by Falk? Was Falk supposed to look older? No clue. I read the entire book in about an hour. There are more pictures than text, which was disappointing. Many of the pictures were just still shots of the film. We don't need those. We need information and pictures we've never seen. I did enjoy reading about how the actors were each personally affected by participating in the film. Overall, however, I was disappointed.

Neat pictures but due to the age of the film some of the pictures are faded. Overall a good fun trip to reminsce about a great film that my local video store wouldn't carry because it was a "B movie and no one will rent it" - how wrong he was. I was excited to get this book. Good quality binding and printing. Made a nice present.

This is a fabulous coffee-table book for fans of the movie, with a new delight with every turn of the page. There are script pages, scene drawings, Polaroids shot during filming, architectural drawings of sets, proof sheets of photos taken on set, short essays by some of the stars, etc. All stuff a true fan - like myself - will enjoy poring over and over. It is also a lovely design, one that is true to the story and movie.

So why only four stars? I agree with the other reviewers who say they wish there had been more. Thoughts from the photographer, set designers, hairstylists, etc., would have been nice, as well as explanations of some of the items included.

But overall, this is a great addition to my book collection.

I bought this book for my father (who loved the film) and he thought it was fantastic. I had previously read a negative review of this book. While I do agree with some criticism mentioned in that review (some of the pictures are slightly out of focus, and yes, there could have been much more information as well as photos considering the movie is a beloved classic), I personally feel it makes a great coffee table book for fans. Maybe when they were making it they didn't realize it would be such a hit. Not the best book about a movie, but certainly worth the money.

I love The Princess Bride, this is a nice simple book that should have come out years and years ago. Wish they had shot more behind the scenes photos and videos of this beloved movie. This book is for completists, and is enjoyable
