...Once folks master all these recipes and techniques, they'll be able to figure out how to make a variation such as a prickly pear margarita on their own. Bottom line: A useful book for any home bartender. --Insatiable, insathope.blogspot.com

The Professional Bartender's Handbook is an easy-to-use book for anyone. If you're stocking your own bar there are lists of what and how much to buy (including alcohol, mixers, and extras), what tools to have on hand (types of glasses, spoons, strainers--who knew?). There's even a chapter on really starting a bar--from business plan through OSHA regs and promotions.

As for recipes, the book has 1500 of them, from A Bat and a Ball to Zuma Buma, with a separate section for non-alcoholic drinks. Over 200 pages filled with recipes! None are indexed, only alphabetized, so if you're looking for various martinis--from apple to vodka, you could be skimming pages for awhile.

The book starts with the basics about liquor, like the difference between Haitian and Jamaican rum, how wines should be served, etc., There's even a chapter on drinking games and toasts--what more could you want? Everything you need to be a fantastic bartender is right here.

I was really disappointed in this book. I almost returned it, but I was too lazy. If I had bought it locally, which I wouldn't have if I looked inside, I definitely would have returned it. I have some preliminary bartending experience and was hoping to learn some more from this book, but it is really just a standard recipe book.

Furthermore, all of the games and tricks are for home parties and nothing to use at a bar or pub. When was the last time I bartender told you about a really cool drinking game to play at a bar and then told the rules of "quarters" . . . a standard drinking game for any college kids.

And get this "trick" that she tries to teach you: "the key to making any drink a shot is to resize the drink." Are you kidding me?

Here is another "trick": to make four shots at once, just quadruple the recipe.

In the back of the book she has case studies where she interviews 10 bartenders and asks them the same questions. One of the questions is "what is your least favorite drink to make for a customer?" Great question. But the problem is that one of the answers is "undertow". So when you want to go find out what an undertow is, it is not listed in her recipes so you have no idea.

For a home bartender this book may suffice (but there are better ones out there). For an aspiring professional bartender, this book is a joke.

I was completely new to everything thats bartending when i got this book and this book has provided a strong base in knowledge of bartending. I think this is a better option for novice bartenders and may not be as useful for the more experienced bartender, but may still help as a reference.

This book was very disappointing for someone who is an aspiring bartender. As someone who has worked for a short time as a part time bartender, I found this book amateurish and a just a one after another after another after another laundry lists of drink "recipes". The recipes are just a list of ingredients. Pictures of the drinks would have been helpful so we know what the finished concoction should look like. The binding format is not amenable to using it on the fly... a spiral bond that allows the book to open flat so you can look at it while preparing an unfamiliar concoction would seem to be mandatory for an alleged "professional" book. not so.... I don't believe the individual who wrote this has actually had any significant or meanigful professional experience bar tending because as a part time bartender I learned a lot of "tricks of the trades" to enhance preparation, serving and presentation and this book includes none of those. I would not recommend this book and wish I hadn't purchased it. Bummerama gigundarama. What a waste of precious dollars... I should have paid attention more to the lower ranked reviews and not the 5 stars... caveat emptor... save your money and look elsewhere.

I bought this book for my son, who has recently become a bartender. I wasn't sure if it would be helpful or not, but he really liked it a lot, there were fun and interesting tips for bartenders to do, along with all the different recipes.
