Editorial Reviews

Review

The idea of assembling a collection of amazing artists from the progressive rock genre all on one record was an especially exciting concept to me. Inspired, I began writing and recording the 7 songs that would become this album. I then sent those recordings out to some of my friends and musical heroes from bands like King Crimson, XTC, Asia, Gentle Giant, and of course my former band Yes. Soon, I started receiving vocal tracks and guitar and keyboard overdubs from studios all over the world, which I then mixed at my recording studio in Los Angeles. Despite the distances in geography, however, the feeling of the entire production is one of musical and spiritual unity - The Prog Collective! - Billy Sherwood

The biggest super group of Progressive Rock players ever assembled!

Features performances by John Wetton (Asia), Tony Levin (King Crimson), Jerry Goodman (Mahavishnu Orchestra), Richard Page (Mr. Mister), Geoff Downes (Yes/Asia), Alan Parsons (Alan Parsons Project), Chris Squire (Yes), Rick Wakeman (Yes), Gary Green (Gentle Giant), Annie Haslam (Renaissance), Steve Hillage (Gong), John Wesley (Porcupine Tree), Tony Kaye (Yes), Colin Moulding (XTC) and more! --Official Press Release

4.0 out of 5 stars A Little Bit of Prog Heaven August 14, 2012
Format:Audio CD
This was a joyful purchase for me, as I've been a long-time fan of most of the artists associated with this project -- in fact, I've had the pleasure of seeing many of the original groups in concert, including Yes, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Mahavishnu Orchestra and Renaissance. What a treat to hear Annie Haslam again, and what a bonus to also feature Yes' original guitarist, Pete Banks on the same track!
My initial concern was the quality of the songwriting, but I was pleasantly surprised - these tracks are tuneful and melodic, and thankfully mostly free of the bombast of much of latter-day prog. I also appreciate that Billy Sherwood is willing to share the guitar spotlight with other players, including Gary Green (Gentle Giant) and Steve Hillage (acid glissando king!) Fine vocals from Richard Page and Colin Moulding further enhance the experience. Coming right on the heels of "Squackett", this is a good time for prog fans! Enjoy!
So why "only" 4 stars? This is a fine album, but I'll reserve 5 stars for true classics, such as "Fragile", "Birds of Fire", "Three Friends" and "Larks' Tongues in Aspic". Very few albums (including this one) are in that league, but I heartily recommend this outing without hesitation - it's very good and very well done.
Note: I opted for the "Deluxe" edition (which also contains instrumental versions of each track). My only gripe is that there is no pdf of album artwork or liner notes, so I'll need to search the web myself for details about the recordings, artists and production.

3.0 out of 5 stars Billy Sherwood's Prog Collective August 27, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I had such high hopes for this album. With guests like Annie Haslam, John Wetton, John Wesley, Gary Green, Richard Page, Chris Squire, Rick Wakeman, Peter Banks, et al, I was expecting so much more. The playing is fine, but somewhat uninspired as it's not a whole band with guest spots. This is a Billy Sherwood production - Billy on drums, Billy on guitar, Billy on keyboard, Billy on bass. The guests are playing with recordings. This does not mean it's bad...it's not. BUT. It easily could have been better. Billy is only average on drums, which is not good enough for me. He's average on bass. He's can play a lot of instruments, but not up to my prog standards.

The songs, while not bad, are not memorable. Melodies are kind of ho hum. The songs don't hold up.

I like Sherwood's work in general. Back Against the Wall, his World Trade Albums, his work with Squire, his work with Yes. This to me is too disjointed. One of the best aspects to prog for me was great musicians playing together. That is missing here, the energy is gone. It's just OK.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well Said Scott! August 15, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
I couldn't agree with Scott more. More often than not, a release containing so many great artists in one assembly does not produce a memorable yield of material, but TPC is certainly an exception. I was also pleasantly surprised to see participation by Steve Hillage, Gary Green and Colin Moulding. A great review by Scott and a great disc worthy of your prog collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deja Vu all over again....
Wow, it's like going back in time to the 70's progressive rock hey-day. Still there is a freshness to it that makes it both nostalgic and refeshingly new.

I pretty-much covered this in my review of Nektar's "A Spoonful of Time." The musicianship is stellar here, but the songs are not all winners. Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars after a few listens, dead to me
A lot of talent goes pretty much nowhere on this album. It is worth a few listens, but the lack of inventiveness makes it wear out its welcome rather quickly. Read more
