5.0 out of 5 stars Il Divo's Latest CD Keeps Its Promise December 1, 2008
Format:Audio CD
Prior to receiving this CD, I was only minimally aware of Il Divo, the princes of popera. I had seen them on television several times, and knew that they had amazing voices and harmonies. When I first listened to this, I was blown away. These songs truly showcase Il Divo's incredible harmonies. The instrumentals are expertly arranged. The melodies are deceptively simple, yet compelling. Each song is full of pleasant surprises in harmonies, melodies and dynamics. If you listen, and emerge yourself in the music, you will not only be interested, you will also be lost in the music. With the exception of Amazing Grace, the songs are in Spanish. Regardless if you understand the words, the music emotes the sentiment of the song in a way that makes it easy to understand the message of the music. Songs such as "La Luna", Angelina and Amazing Grace really showcase the power, range and precision of Il Divo's voices.

5.0 out of 5 stars Il Divo The Promise Deluxe Edition November 19, 2008
By Thomas
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The Boys are back with a new CD called The Promise. This CD is a "Promise Kept" of great new songs that are sung with Il Divo perfection. The music is on this CD is also outstanding.Carlos, Urs, David , Sebby, you are all truly gifted singers. My favorites include La Promessaa,Hallelujah,Enamorado She. The Deluxe edition has two songs performed Live,The Power of Love,Hallelujah and a Interveiw with the Boys. A great new CD to relax and get swept away with. A great collection of songs there is no "weak song" on the Promise. The best CD of 2008.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable November 24, 2008
Format:Audio CD
This is a magnificent group of singers in great voice. The selection of songs and the language they are sung in is designed to show this group's range and abilities. With the exception of "Amazing Grace", this is not a sing along CD. This is akin to an opera CD, you do not expect to understand the words but you will enjoy the music and be astounded by the voices. A word about "Amazing Grace", this is one of the best versions available. Alone, it is worth the price of the CD. The DVD is a nice but not required item. We listen to this CD and always stop to turn up the last track.

2.0 out of 5 stars Mannerism December 5, 2008
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Disappointed! No challenge. The same tempi and the same mood with a huge tutti at the end with a cheap modulation. Sorry, don't take it negative!
I have been a sincere Il Divo fan since 2 years ago. What is cross-over music? I wonder how much they (4 wonderful singers) are involved in music choice and arranging. I want them to be original. They can find any motif or melody from Faure, Massnet, Richard Strauss, Rachmaninov, even from Bach---anywhere. Think what they did in the past: 'Isabel' from Faure, 'Aranjuez' from Rodrigo, 'All by Myself' arranged by Eric Carmen who had taken a motif from Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No 2 (if I am right). These are cross-over music. But I liked 'Regresa A Mi', 'Nella Fantasia', ' Passera', 'Notte di Luce', 'Caruso' and 'Musica' etc.
This recent album makes me feel so dull--even 'Adagio' by Albinoni.
They don't have to be operatic because of their backgrounds. It depends on the song itself. Am I the only person to think this way? I do wish Il Divo's future prosperity.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Artistry - Selections a bit below par? November 18, 2008
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
As a huge fan of Il Divo, this album was a little disappointing in that I can listen to Ancora over and over without tiring of the songs but after two repeats of this album, I must admit I was bored with it. The Albinoni "Adagio" is probably my favorite and it has been for years instrumentally. They have given it a new life and I do love this track! "The Power of Love" is also a favorite, but the rest are just very nice but I can't listen to them repeatedly as I can the other albums. I think the producers need to take a page from the operatic albums and include English translations for those of us who aren't fluent in Spanish, Italian and French. "Amazing Grace" is really well performed and the bagpipes the perfect touch, however, I can only listen to a hymn twice and then I'm done for awhile. I just really like all their previous albums better than this one, however, there is no denying that the four are extremely talented with great voices and a really nice break from the classical music and opera that I always listen to. Now, for the next album, maybe they could try some of opera's great hits! This is worth the price of the disc and I am looking forward to seeing the DVD/CD version I've ordered. I just liked the songs they have chosen on other albums better than this material. However, I hope everyone buys it and it becomes their fifth hit! Their Christmas album is certainly recommended as BEAUTIFUL in the extreme! They have been on vacation a long time and it's great to have them back, even if I can't give their album 5 stars. That is for content, not performance.

3.0 out of 5 stars I expected more December 4, 2008
By A. Maly
Format:Audio CD
After all the hype I have heard about their previous albums, I was very excited to sit down and listen to my first Il Divo CD. Unfortunately, I was disappointed.

I can best describe the album as "not bad". There are definitely shining moments throughout the album, such as:
Adagio--one of the most gorgeous melodies written by Albinoni. I am very familiar with the original instrumental version, but was impressed with the vocals and the arrangement.
L'Alba del Mondo--like many of the other songs, it starts out beautiful, with a nice instrumental introduction. The melody is gorgeous, but like MANY of the other songs, the ending is a bit over the top.
The opening of Amazing Grace--I'm not sure who sang the opening verse but it was amazing! He sang with such clarity and purity and made such a simple opening very moving. And the bagpipes were unexpectedly a very nice instrumentation for the piece.

There were several reasons that I felt disappointed with the album. One was the song selection. There was a nice variety of classical and pop, but almost all the songs were the same slow tempo! I also don't really understand the reasoning for changing the original languages to the songs. There was really no reason to change everything into Spanish or Italian (except for Amazing Grace in English). But my biggest issue with almost every song on this album, even Amazing Grace which opened with such an amazing opening, was that the musical climaxes were OVER THE TOP!

In English or Spanish?
They seem to have a mix of Spanish, English and Italian with maybe a track in French as their other albums. I love the Adagio; it's been one of my favorite melodies for years and I think they did a great job with it. I've heard several of the other tracks and they are very fine with improved... Read More
