Book Description

When pastry chef Jane Gray tries to sell her daughter's locket, she becomes the unlikely subject of a massive police hunt and fodder for London's tabloid press. Secrets unravel, lies are exposed, and the Duke of Rutledge demands custody of his niece.

Charming and handsome, the duke's brother Finn spends his leisure time between the sheets of London's most beautiful, wanton women. The seasoned rake is perplexed by his attraction to demure, virtuous Jane... definitely not his usual type. Finn soon learns there is more to Jane than meets the eye and he longs to possess the passionate woman hidden beneath her modest facade.

When publicity draws the attention of a madman from Jane's past, Finn enters London's dangerous underworld in a heart-stopping race to save her.

Publishers Weekly Review

"A notorious rake finds love with his niece's adoptive mother in a sweet romance about the power of family and friendship. When humble baker Jane Gray befriends a pregnant teen, she has no idea how that friendship will change her life... The connection between mother and daughter is affectionate and deep, and though Jane's budding relationship with Finn is both tender and sexy, it's the parental love that steals the heart of this romance... a beautiful story of two distinct types of love and affection."

Filled with mystery and suspense. Well written, well thought out, and loaded with an amazing plot. The love story is simply icing on the cake.
~ Danielle Perez, The Bookwhore Blog

Right from the beginning to each new twist and turn and delicious revelation, you will be held within the lovely world Kate Worth has created.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating Plot! August 22, 2012
Format:Paperback
Jane is a baker raising another woman's child alone, after the child's mother met an untimely death. Trying to set up a future for the young girl named Pip, Jane decides to pawn a locket left to Pip by her mother. When Jane arrives at the pawn shop however things get a little odd. Jane narrowly escapes capture at the pawn shop but opens the paper the next day to find a picture of herself labeled as a thief. The story takes off from there and a plot filled with mystery and suspense unfolds that captivated me and left me barreling through the pages of The Promise.

When I first started reading this book I wasn't sure what to expect. I am kind of particular about my romance novels. I like them loaded heavily with romance and a plot that revolves around my two characters falling in love. The Promise is a bit different. The romance is ever so present between the characters but the story is what really captured me. Every time I thought I had the plot figured out something new would present itself and throw me for a loop.

Jane is a baker but she is elegant, graceful, and lovely but yet she is still modest. I pictured Jane to be Marry Poppins lovingly caring for this child that was not hers, and stunningly beautiful. Do not let Jane's character fool you into thinking she only plays the doting woman, Jane is in fact hiding secrets that play into the mystery inside this novel.

The characters all had chemistry with each other, and the romance while at first wasn't very present toward the end catapulted. Finn, The Duke, and The Duchess have all lost someone dear to them and have suffered so much sadness over the years. Until the day they meet the little show stealer Pip. Talk about a cute child!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Promise~ September 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
When Jane Gray spots a young woman alone in a rough spot of town, she takes her under her wing and ends up sharing her home with her. When the baby girl arrives a few months later, it becomes clear why the young woman was hiding but her death leaves Jane alone with the baby girl, Pip. Jane raises Pip as her own as there is no clue as to the real identity of her birth mother. Five years pass and Jane knows she much provide for Pip's future as life can change in the blink of an eye. Needing to set aside a large sum of money, she decides to sell the only valuable thing she has--a locket from Pip's birth mother. Little does she know that when she attempts to sell the locket, she will be branded a thief as the owner of the locket is a duke! Jane decides her best course of action is to try to explain how she came to own the locket straight to the duke and hopefully avoid the noose. When the truth comes out about Pip's mother, Jane is afraid she is going to lose her forever. After all, how can Jane, a baker, raise a duke's niece in the life necessary? And why can't she stop thinking about the duke's brother, Finn?

Lord Fionnlagh Wallace, Finn, has never stopped looking for his missing sister, Maura, all these years that she has been gone. Fearing the worst, he immediately takes a dislike to this plain woman who has Maura's locket. How dare she come into his home and try to pass off a child as his niece? It quickly becomes clear how wrong he is and together with his family, they try to come up with a plan to envelope Pip into her new family without excluding the woman who raised her. Nevertheless, society always sticks their nose in where it doesn't belong and soon a scandal is threatening to erupt and Finn comes up with a solution that should please everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Happy I took it with me to the beach! July 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Just finished reading The Promise and am eagerly awaiting Worth's next one! I felt a great connection to the story's heroine, Jane Gray, who is a reserved yet gracious character, and able to take care of herself even under duress. I like books where the female characters are self sufficient, though not cold hearted or an island unto themselves. Jane is also a wit at times, and the banter between her and Finn I really enjoyed. The dialogue moved the story along quite well, bringing the characters vividly alive. The twists and turns of the plot held my interest, and I sat up until 2 a.m. to finish. Thank heavens I was at the beach and did not have to get up the next morning to go to work! Make sure when you start the book to give yourself enough time to finish before the wee hours of the morning : ) -- you'll be glad you did!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed Feelings February 11, 2013
By Jamagan
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Have you ever been lured into purchasing a book based on unanimously stellar reviews, and then wondered if you read the same book as everyone else?

That's my predicatament with The Promise. The praise for this book was stellar and solid, some of the practically glowing. What I read felt lukewarm and predictable.

I read a lot, an average of 2-3 books per week. I've come across some terrible books. This is definitely not one of them. I've also come across amazing books with characters that leap off the page and stay with you for days or weeks. This is definitely not one of them. The Promise lands somewhere in between, a book that is pleasant to read but not something that sticks in my head while I'm away from it and not something I'm likely to remember once the next book is started.

What I enjoyed:
- The main character, Jane, is a likeable and overall just a good person. She takes in someone else's baby and raises that little girl as her own. That's admirable.
- The pace was generally steady and didn't feel like it was dragging.

Some of the things I found bothersome (may contain spoilers!)
- Predictable plot. Every single event is obvious well before it happens. Jane obviously couldn't be "just a baker" if she is to retain the interest of a titles peer and make it reasonable. There's no mystery in any of the events unfolding, which makes it less thrilling. Even the bad guy narrates everything he plans to do, chapters beforehand, so there's no surprise when his attacks occur.
- One-dimensional characters. Jane is good and never does anything that isn't wholesomely good and saccharine sweet. The bad guy is pure evil, and never says or does anything that isn't over the top violent or selfish. Who is like that in real life?

More About the Author

Kate Worth lived a nomadic childhood, moving every year or two as her father was assigned to a new post throughout his career with the State Department. Her family was evacuated during the revolution in Iran, watched tanks roll through the streets of Quito, Ecuador during a coup d'etat, survived an Oktoberfest bombing in Munich and a massive earthquake in Chile that walked their refrigerator across the kitchen floor... all events that fired her fertile imagination.

She began her career as a journalist then meandered into graphic design, illustration, and baby making for a decade before returning to her first love... writing. Now she pens the types of novels she likes to read... historical romances with strong story lines, complex, swoon-worthy heroes and strong, interesting heroines.

In her spare time Kate collects Victorian etiquette manuals, old newspapers and magazines about life in pre-1900s England, and first-person travelogues from the Golden Age of travel.

She loves reader feedback and always responds to emails. Drop her a note at KateWorthRomance@yahoo.com or visit her website, http://www.kateworth.com/.
