More About the Author

Patricia Sands lives in Toronto, Canada, when she isn't somewhere else. An admitted travel fanatic, she can pack a bag in a flash and be ready to go anywhere ... particularly the south of France.

Her award-winning debut novel The Bridge Club was published in 2010 and her second novel, The Promise of Provence was an Amazon Hot New Release in April 2013, a USA Best Book 2013 Finalist and a 2013 Finalist in Literary Fiction, National Indie Excellence Awards. A new release is scheduled for Summer 2014.

Celebrating the rewarding friendships and bonds women share, her stories examine the challenges life often throws in our paths. Location features prominently in all of her novels.

The Love In Provence series ~ The Promise of Provence (2013); Promises To Keep (Summer 2014) ~ allows readers to lose themselves in the beauty of the south of France without leaving home.

Frequently invited to speak with women's groups on the subjects of writing and self-publishing, topics also cover the importance of valuing our personal stories and seeing ageing as opportunity. At other events along with her Sommers & Sands speaking partner, author Susan Sommers, through keynotes, workshops and conferences, audiences are encouraged to embrace change and see challenges as opportunities.

Her philosophy is that it's never too late to begin something new, to seize each day and be a possibilitarian! As the saying goes, just do it! Hearing from readers (both men and women, from ages 20 to 84) is her greatest reward.

I can't promise this novel with satisfy your longing for France. In fact, I'd have to say that it made mine worse. The Promise of Provence by Patricia Sands is strongest when it takes the reader throughout Provence -- the cliff villages, the coastal towns, the vineyards. It definitely made me yearn to return.
The novel begins in Toronto with Katherine's 22nd wedding anniversary. She arrives home to learn her husband has left her for another woman. Katherine's journey through pain and loss isn't over though. Some might call this novel a romance, but I prefer to think of it as a novel about a woman's independence.
Katherine decides to exchange homes with a couple in Provence. That's where the travel really begins, and the romance sparks as she puts her past life behind her.
The culture of France, the realization that every minute of life should be seized and lived to the fullest, spark hope in Katherine.
Here's a quote from her time in the market:
"Adding three jars of lavender honey to her basket, her next stop was the herb seller, whose long table blazed with vivid color and filled the air with a bouquet of fragrantly pungent smells that was almost hallucinogenic. Here she chose three mixtures prepared by the woman whose flamboyant makeup and dresses were as colorful as her wares. One packet was for preparing fish dishes, another for Mediterranean salads, and the last for lamb.
As she lingered, she was reminded of the word "la garrique," which Joy had used to describe the combination of earthy, herbal, floral, and other scents found in the Provencal markets. It was unique and something she felt she would not forget.
Her last stop was the soap vendor.

I am an avid traveller and most enjoy reading books that take me on a journey to discover far off places. The Promise of Provence did just that. It took me back to one of my favourite places, Provence France. Patricia's story about Kate's journey kept me interested and wanting more. I looked forward to picking up the book every chance I could get and enjoyed losing myself in the pages and Kate's story. There were many great references to wonderful towns, markets, stores and more. It made me want to go back to Provence to search out the places she wrote about. Excellent book. I sure hope there's a sequel.
Debbie Ross.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Though I thought I was getting a typical change your life travel book there was quite a bit more to this story. In fact, more than a quarter of the book goes by before Katherine begins the travel part, which gave the story more depth. Once in Provence, well, for the arm chair traveler you feel like you are actually there taking in the sights and scents of southern France. The flowers, the vineyards, the castles, the wines, the cheeses, the hills, the beaches, the marketplaces, they are all beautifully and vividly described. I also liked the way the author portrayed Katherine realistically growing from feeling lonely and out of place to the newfound joy that takes her over as she begins to fit in, make friends and develops a love affair with Provence. While there is romance in the book, the main romance is the one that Katherine begins with Provence. The feeling is contagious and after reading this book I want to visit France even more!

This is a enchanting story about Provence and it reminds me so much of my visits through France visiting the country, the vineyards, wineries, restaurants, Cannes, Eze, etc., all the places I had the wonderful opportunity to visit and stay including Switzerland and Italy. All the history is so alluring and true that one cannot help but enjoy reading about the history and romance. It is so true, and the food tastes every bit as delicious as described. I look forward to the sequel.

"The Promise of Provence" can be said to be a beautifully phrased travelogue that is a pleasure to read. It can be highly recommended on that merit alone. You can almost smell the lavender, hear the bells on the goats tinkle, and sip the local wine as you escape into the story. However, what truly makes this novel stand apart is how deftly the author, Patricia Sands, shares the gentle life lessons that we all could be reminded of especially nous les femmes d'us certain âge. This novel’s story particularly resonated with me.

Sometimes you are heading along at full speed heading toward a known direction, and then someone, something, changes the track you are on without any warning. You are now heading someplace new and probably still at full speed. However, now you don’t know where you are going or where you will end up. This is what happened to our protagonist, Katherine, when she came home expecting the usual traditional anniversary dinner with her husband James of twenty-two years only to find a note telling her that he has left her for another woman and that they are expecting a baby.

This is when Kat’s awakening begins. This is when she realizes the importance of girlfriends, of getting help when you need it, of reconnecting with your loved ones, of finding new ways of doing things, and being open to new possibilities. Nevertheless, like all awakenings, Kat’s is not without its twists and turns and unexpected bumps.

What I thought that was exceptional about “The Promise of Provence” was how Sands weaved in Katherine’s past life with her ex-husband.
