Melina Kanakaredes has the kind of warm, easy accessibility upon which long television careers are founded. The popularity of Providence--in which Kanakaredes plays Sydney Hansen, a plastic surgeon who returns home to find more meaning in her life--rests mostly on her shoulders, though certainly the rest of the cast is an engaging lot: Paula Cale plays Joanie, Syd's single-mom sister; Mike Farrell (formerly BJ Honeycutt of M*A*S*H) plays her veterinarian father, who relates better with animals than people; Seth Peterson is her rapscallion younger brother Robbie; and Concetta Tomei haunts Syd's dreams as her mother, who dies in Providence's pilot episode. Story-wise, the show is all over the map--soap opera (every family member goes through many relationship traumas), melodrama (in only the second episode, Syd saves an autistic girl from being institutionalized), comedy (in the fifth season, Robbie and his wife open a B&B, only to be plagued with skunks), suspense (a thug tries to murder a lovable drug-sniffing dog), even political thriller (when Syd dates a married congressman, blackmail erupts).

The Providence Collection is something of a greatest hits collection, so weddings, births, and christenings dominate the selected episodes. The writing can be awkward and obvious, but the capable cast holds everything together, and there's no denying that every episode keeps things lively by packing in at least three interweaving storylines. --Bret Fetzer

4.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite series on TV June 8, 2004
By Tim
Providence is a show that portrays the trials of the Hansen family and how they dealt with it. The main character, Sydney Hansen (Melina Kanakaredes) was a doctor in cosmetic surgery but after leaving Los Angeles where she practiced, she worked in a low-income medical clinic in her hometown of Providence. At home, she lives with her father (Mike Farrel), her brother Robbie (Seth Peterson), her sister Joanie (Paula Cale), and the spirit of her deceased mother (Concetta Tomei) who passes away in the first episode.
Episodes are as follows:
1.) Pilot - Aired January 8, 1999
Dr. Sydney Hansen, a plastic surgeon in Los Angeles, makes a journey home to Providence, Rhode Island to attend her pregnant sister's wedding.
2.) Home Again - Aired January 15, 1999
Sydney Hansen resettles in Providence and her dreams begin to by intruded by her late mother.
3.) Tying the Knot - Aired February 12, 1999
Joanie suddenly decides to marry the father of her child, but Syd has doubts about the marriage.
4.) The Letter - Aired October 1, 1999
On the first anniversary of Lynda's death, the Hansens agree to celebrate her life with a memorial dinner.
5.) Don't Go Changin' - Aired March 31, 2000
The Hansens decided to throw Jim a suprise 60th birthday party. Joanie gives Dog Boy ("Ed's" Tom Cavanagh guest stars) the confidence to follow a dream.
6.) The Thanksgiving Story - Aired November 24, 2000
Two-hour Thanksgiving episode; the Hansen clan tries to have an idyllic family Thanksgiving. Joanie thinks she might be pregnant again.
7.) Falling - Aired May 18, 2001
Syd considers cutting her ties with Joe Connelly after meeting his wife. Robbie's relationship with Tina (Maria Pitillo guest stars) falters.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Providence Collection~Somewhat Disappointing June 17, 2005
By CireneL
The episodes included in this set are good ones, but I would prefer a whole season. The most disappointing aspect of the set is that the original theme song isn't used as the intro to each episode! I felt cheated as the theme was such an integral part of the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Please release the entire series on DVD September 26, 2004
This show was, and continues to be quality TV. To release only certain episodes from individual seasons is to not offer this delightful program its due justice. I'll no doubt purchase this DVD, but I'll never be satisfied until I am able to view every episode over and over again.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Best of Should Be A Taste of What's to Come January 2, 2006
Verified Purchase
This sweet collection of Providence episodes is just what it says it is -- a collection of some of the best episodes of all five seasons. I thought that this would be the precursor for the full series dvd sets but I guess I was wrong. I really can't fathom why a show as popular as Providence doesn't have the full package like the other shows do. It might be the only show that doesn't have it.

The commentaries and bloopers are the best. I especially loved the final episode at the end where the cast is dancing and fooling around. Lots of fun.

One of the big disappointments on this set is the fact that they not only did not use the original US theme song "In My Life" but they also switched the songs from the episodes too. The songs were an integral part of the show and many times kept the viewers coming back for more.

This was a good start but it looks as if there will not be any more dvds forthcoming. So enjoy what you can.

A Kid's Review
I ordered this DVD a week ago and received it today- one day after the DVD was released. Can you imagine how happy I was!!! First of all, the DVD box got me excited....It featured beautiful pictures (some of which I have never seen before) Each disc features a picture of the cast. The DVD comes with a small booklet with a letter from John Masius, the creator of the show. The letter was very touching, and you get a lump in your throat when you read it. The booklet also describes each episode.
For those of you who are disapointed that the Theme song wasn't featured before each episode, I recommend that you buy the Providence soundtrack: It features 2 versions of "In My Life" and if you recall, the last episode of Season 5 of Providence titled "The Eleventh Hour", featured "In My Life" by Chantal Kreviazuk at the end of the episode.
Kudos to Lion's Gate Entertainment and all the other people involved in making the Providence DVD dream become a reality.

4.0 out of 5 stars Providence Rules! June 24, 2005
I just wanted to say that I love Providence. It was my favorite show. This DVD was great, but it was only a Best OF. I wish they release every season. This DVD was great, but it would be even better if they would release all of the seasons.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed... February 18, 2005
By Alison
BUT NOT WITH THE SHOW. It is such a shame that a "Best of" collection was released and not the whole series. With all the garbage shows that are being sold on DVD's lately, you would think that maybe, just maybe, someone would recognize QUALITY.

It really breaks my heart, especially since I lived in Providence during the time it was being filmed and airing. Everytime I see it, it feels like I am going back...I just wish I could go back more :(

3.0 out of 5 stars The Providence Collection July 10, 2006
First of all, I was happy there was a Providence DVD, but disappointed that there was only the one. I liked the shows on it, but it did jump around a little too much. Could be due to the fact not knowing which episodes to put in. Anyway, some of my favorites are missing. I should think with all the hype nowadays of making DVD's of TV shows, there should be more than one DVD of Providence. It was a great show, and we could fall in love with the characters, and definitely identify with them and it was missed when it went off the air by me and I'm sure lots of others. How about more DVD'S.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quality show...too bad it's just a "best of" DVD
