Book Description

Maeven Dayne loves all of her kids and most of them love her, but she must choose between them: the juvenile defendants at work or her sons at home. On her last day at the job, a juvenile probation officer she despises drags a weeping young girl before an irritated judge for an unscheduled hearing. Maeven can’t resist the girl’s pitiful pleas for help and decides to intervene.

While defending this girl, she discovers people are profiting from imprisoning innocent kids in juvenile placement facilities, but whom? A psychologist who tries to expose the kids-for-cash scheme is murdered, but he’s left clues. When her oldest son is arrested and detained on false charges, her husband receives a message proposing an offer: Maeven quits her job and the case or they lose their son. Her husband insists that she choose their son. The problem? Can she sacrifice one for the other?

Editorial Reviews

"M.D Cliatt is an excellent writer, who weaves a story so gripping that it's hard to stop reading until you reach the very end. Her characters are well developed and very relatable, especially Maeven who is a strong female lead who manages to balance career and family. This book is a worthy read and I give it 4 stars." -Waiting on Sunday to Drown

"It had me sitting on the edge of my seat and once I got to the last few chapters I couldn't put it down so I stayed up late just to find out how it all ended. I love the characters and I found that they were super relatable and I could see them being real people. I hate books where there is no way that the characters could ever be real people because of how the author writes about them. I would recomend this book to any who likes thrill/mystery books.  FTC-I received this book for free in return for my review. The opinions expressed in this post are 100% mine. I received no other compensation for this review." - The World As I See It

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice beginning.... February 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
It is obvious that the author feels a real connection to the characters in The Public Pretender. Their fiery passion draws you in and keeps you guessing as the characters are whipped along on a legal rollercoaster.

Sadly, the passion behind the story cannot correct for cumbersome dialogue and weak editing. At times The Public Pretender reads like a first draft where the author has simply listed plot points to move along. I believe that with more time and editing, this could have been a really good book. As it is, it is an interesting story that doesn't quite make the cut.

My verdict: Read the e-book. For $2 (now appears to be free), it is worth reading, if for no other reason than to encourage M.D. Cliatt to work on a second book with Maeven Dayne. I'd like to see Maeven get the treatment deserving of such a rich character.

5.0 out of 5 stars A GOOD ONE!! January 3, 2012

I loved this story! An action packed read that showcases a strong and smart woman, that is battling some life impacting decisions, in the courtroom, that really challenges her family, career, and the lives of all around her. I couldn't put it down! I was on edge wanting to know what was going to happen next. She is such a firecracker and had me taken by surprise throughout the book. Also, if you like a great courtroom you go!

5.0 out of 5 stars Laughed, Cried, Got Mad...BUT LOVED IT April 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Maeven Dayne is straight FUNNY. She reminds me of my mother in soooo many ways; I like her business savvy attitude although she will cuss you out in a minute if you cross her wrong. This story made me laugh, it made me cry, I got mad plenty of times; but I LOVED it. Please keep them coming! I would love to see a part 2 to The Public Pretender. You have a new fan on your hands!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not pretending April 1, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book was free, but people should be paid to read it. The writer seems to have a connection to the problems of Juvenile Court, but there are many typos and poor grammar that interfere with the plot. Obviously, no one proof read the manuscript.

I am a Walter Mosley fan and love his style of writing. I found Cliatt style to be equally compelling. This book was a good read. I couldn't wait to finish. It is a page turner.

1.0 out of 5 stars Too scattered and unrealistic
I enjoy fiction that is somewhat reality. An individual with her intelligence and dedication would not act in the manner in which she did. Poorly written and very disjointed.
