The selling point of this product is the possibility to access online resources about the subject. The book comes with an access code and pages explaining how much you can get from Connect Lucas. But once you try to register on the web site you discover that the access for 10th edition is no longer existent and only students with a instructor can get the benefits of the online data base. It is totally frustrating for a self-study customer and a great mislead for people spending over 100$ on it. McGraw-Hill does not care and Amazon keep promoting it "with Connect Lucas". Besides the introduction mention a free DVD included but there is nothing actually.

this is a great book, i've really enjoyed reading it. i had to buy this for my public speaking class, but its not like a textbook. it reads like a regular informational book, and has a lot of useful information. recommended for anyone who wants some professional advise on how to improve on your public speaking.

The book itself was delivered quickly and in new condition. However, I am unable to access the online component which is supposed to provide access to speeches that are referenced in the book. I've registered using the code supplied in the book and even contacted the customer service department of the publisher that was given online and in the book to no avail. Will keep trying. I find this very disappointing since actually viewing and hearing the delivery of speeches is key to this course.

I would love to see the authors have more tolerance for differing views in future releases of this book.

I think that a book printed for students about public speaking should strive to be somewhat politically neutral.

I wish the publisher would allow Amazon customers to preview inside this book. Because just about anyone looking through it would be able to see what I'm referring to. The first chapter starts out with a glowing review of the White House Green Job adviser Van Jones. Who after this book was printed resigned from his position at the White House over controversy. Now, I don't have a issue with Van Jones. Just tell me MORE about what makes Van Jones a great public speaker and LESS about his political messages. It's very easy to love a public speaker who's saying things that you agree with. And very easy to dislike someone who is a great speaker and saying things that you disagree with.

Who is the greatest speaker that you can think of? I'll take a guess and say that you're in agreement with what that person has said. Right? Since we live in a diverse society where people have different opinions I think the book should have been more tolerant to messages that the authors may not agree with. And focused more on the persons speaking ability. If you have similar political views to the authors the book will be great for you. If you have different political views the book will be very frustrating and read like propaganda. And if you don't know much about politics you will be indoctrinated with another persons political views.

I bought this book brand new due to the online access code. The book is really an easy and educational read (for being a text book). I usually find textbooks difficult to read, but this has been good. I haven't used the online access code because I want to be able to resell it with the code intact, but I can see where it would be good to have. This book was exactly what I needed for my summer class, and I received it promptly. Thanks Amazon.

My class was using the newer version, but this one did just fine! The newest version had a few statistical changes and different page numbers.

This text was required for a public speaking course. My first impression was that it was written for sixth grade students. However, it actually proved to be very helpful. For example, there is discussion about body language and gestures for public speakers. The book gives students the most concise direction without a lot of unnecessary elaboration, which is more helpful than wasting time reading when the actual speech/ PowerPoint / handout(s) should be the focus. While the book appears to have somewhat of a political agenda, it didn't prove to be part of the course I took. Also, if a public speaking course does not require Connect Lucas, this edition is almost identical to the newer edition, which allowed me to save some money as well. Although, I suspect Connect Lucas can be helpful for those courses that utilize it.

I bought this book for a Speech class. I really liked it because it was very clear, with easy and practical examples. I learned a lot from the book.
However, some of the examples are not updated, but you still get the author's point.
Also, in each chapter, the author highlights key concepts and in one side of the pages, he writes a short definition of the key concepts, which makes easier to study and memorize them.
