Book Description

The Quest for Health Reform: A Satirical History brings together two American political traditions - editorial cartooning as a medium for trenchant contemporary commentary and the long-standing effort to achieve universal national health reform. As early as the nineteenth century, caricatures and cartoons parodied the leading personalities and institutions in American politics. This book focuses on national health reform as told through the vision of popular editorial cartoonists.

Editorial Reviews

"A vivid and timely account of the lurching history of American health care which is simultaneously thought-provoking, informative and entertaining -- and a hats-off salute to the role of cartoonists!" --Rosemary A. Stevens, PhD., Weill Cornell Medical College

"This is an insightful approach to telling a uniquely American story about health policy. It's a memorable journey through U.S. health reform history, and a cautionary tale about the obstacles facing all those who seek health care justice." --John E. McDonough, DrPH, MPA; Harvard School of Public Health

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, Insightful Read/Viewing April 24, 2013

Certainly worth the money for those interested in the topic whether you are just a beginning in the history of healthcare or a season veteran. Good mix of visuals (the 'toons) and backstory on the various writers and where they came from (national political climate). Only weakness may be the highly evident progressive (Liberal) tone of the book...although that is to be expected and/or appreciated given the subject matter!

Cartoons are an excellent way to engage students. In this book, they serve as a doorway to more substantive discussion.
