Editorial Reviews

From the Author

The Quest is the fourth installment of the Psionic Pentalogy. If you haven't yet read the first three books, now would be a good time to go back and give Wild-born a try.

If you're here having read the first three books, you may think you know what to expect in this one. If so, then it is my hope that you will be very surprised. Now that we are well into the second half of the pentalogy and approaching its inevitable climax, I have done my best to pull out all the stops, moving The Quest far away from the previous books in both setting and pacing.

Hope you enjoy the ride. (And if you haven't done so yet, please post your reviews.)

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful By Sean P. Endress on April 17, 2013
Format: Kindle Edition
Full disclosure: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. The opinions below are entirely my own.

"The Quest" is the fourth and penultimate book in the PSIONIC series, so I (and the author, and the characters) strongly advise reading the first three books. There isn't much detailed catch-up in the book, so again, definitely read the others first. This review may contain spoilers for the previous books, so if you'd rather skip it (or my ridiculously long reviewing style!) head on down to the last full paragraph, my "bottom line". It'll be safe there, honest!

Picking up almost directly after "Lesser Gods", "The Quest" wastes little time as the plot picks up with a bang (several, in fact) and big changes are made for our cast. Carrying on prior themes, as Adrian reaches his mid-teens the reader will hopefully be in the same age range, as darkness and violence lurk around every corner. The plot moves rapidly and excitement abounds.

The pacing hardly slows, and while at some points locales blur past without much description, the overall effect is pleasing as there's not a dull moment in the whole book. The main characters continue to evolve and grow into new roles, demonstrating their ongoing journey, and indicating that it may soon be reaching an end. A few new faces join in as well a surprising blast from the past. Mysteries begin to come unraveled and generate further questions, creating callbacks to the past that make for a very satisfying reading experience.

Stylistically, Mr. Howell maintains his usual level of writing quality, adapting deftly to the mind and style of a teenager. His language is succinct but generally descriptive, managing complex ideas with an economy of wording.

This book is party of a set of 5 books To fully appreciate the book you need to read read them all, but that will be no chore, as this is one of the tightest series of books I have read in a long time.

The plot is compelling and pulls you eagerly through all 5 books. The characters are well developed, if somewhat quirky because of the nature of the story and its sci-fi aspects. The story moves very smoothly and seamlessly through a variety of fascinating twists and turns.

Truly I do not know when I have enjoyed a series of books more. It is not as complex as something epic like Lord of the Rings, but it definitely hits the high ground for the genre. I most definitely can recommend this series and this book.

Who could you forgive to achieve your goals? With more plot twists than an after school special, The Quest keeps you frantically turning the pages.

This is a sequal to 4 or 5 other books and I got to tell you this is one series of books that will stay on your mind for a long time as you watch innocent young kids life become one tragic situation after another all the way to adult hood. The series is just amazaing. Really should read it.

It was hard to put this book down. There are so many twists, turns, ups, downs, and a lot of gray!
Adrian must grow up fast. He is under a lot of pressure, and must make many difficult decisions. He
is also faced with a horrible thought. With trepidation I start the next book.

This series is awesome. The characters' continued growth and depth is just amazing. You feel their pain as though it were your own. Loved it and can't wait for the conclusion!
