Book Description

October 15, 2009

Providing quilters, researchers, and design enthusiasts with a comprehensive tool for finding, identifying, and drafting more than 4,000 unique patterns, this encyclopedia of quilt block designs presents a method of categorizing designs that eliminates duplication and allows quilters to understand exactly how each one is constructed. Each design is analyzed in terms of the grid on which it is drawn, making it easy recreate the pattern in any size or color scheme desired. Each block is thoroughly researched and listed according the original name and date of publication. Double names and duplicates are cross-referenced for easy use. Packed with information and inspiration, this also contains photographs of full quilts, as well as a detailed bibliography and indexes.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

*Starred Review* An amazing amount of meticulous research elevates this compendium from a ho-hum aggregate to one that inspires and engages. Well-known quilter and prolific author (a dozen titles, such as Quilting by Hand, 2004, and Patchwork Puzzle Balls, 2005) Beyer pored through newspapers, catalogs, patterns, and magazines of the 1800s and 1900s to prepare illustrations—along with grids, dates, and multiple names—of more than 4,000 quilting blocks, the foundation of this genre of stitching. Yet providing that resource wasn’t enough; Beyer enhances her encyclopedic reference by featuring mini catalogs of like-minded design styles, like bow ties, airplanes, the Red Cross, and kaleidoscope blocks. She also details her sources with commentary and explains how she categorized the blocks. Worthy of any quilting (and quilter’s) library. --Barbara Jacobs

5.0 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs UP!! January 27, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Wow, I just found out about this book and ordered a copy right away. After it arrived today, these are my thoughts. First off, I am a huge fan of Jinny Beyer's work. I have almost all of her other books and have been very influenced by her teaching books. I learned to love and enjoy hand piecing because of Jinny and really appreciate her quilt designs with influences from India. For this book, I absolutely loved the very huge section on quilt grids! Huge amounts of information to empower you to create your own block designs. That is hugely exciting to me, rather than feel stuck with something in a pattern that is same old, same old. I get bored easily because quilting can feel very repetitive and monotonous but with the huge variety of quilt blocks, each one is a new adventure. That section of the book is like a treasure chest to me. Ok, now here is some information on the book that you should be aware of. The "finished" quilt blocks are probably made using computer software and digital copies of Jinny's fabric (I don't think each and everyone of these were actually made) - still a huge amount of work! Second, while the book does have 5000 or so blocks (I didn't count but can easily imagine there are after flipping through the book), there might be 25 variations on a single block. Finally, there are no measurements or instructions for piecing the blocks, that is up to you to figure out. An unbelievable work of quilt scholarship, "The" authoritative reference on probably every quilt block known to man, and the fun of reading passages written by Jinny throughout the book. If you don't feel you need this much information, Jinny is a very generous quilter and has provided many quilt block designs and patterns available on her website for free.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jinny does it again November 7, 2009
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
What an absolute compedium of knowledge Jinny has amassed in this book. If you want to know the history of a block, this book will tell you. It is also a virtually endless source of block ideas, and a manual on how to decipher the drafting of any goven type of block, and how to draft the blocks yourself. And every single block shown in color, in real fabric. What a visual delight!

A beautifully presented work of Jinny Beyer , certainly worth the wait. Informative and instructional work of highest quality. A must have for the library of every true quilter. And if you are new to the art, the contents will certainly help you to a quilt of quality. It covers every type of quilt block and the grid to achieve the block or perhaps find a new block inspired by the information.
Jinny has again achieved the the best of the best among quilters.

Jinny Beyer's new book for March 2009 release
No, this is not a reissue of The Quilter's Album of Blocks and Borders, and the name is different. It is a completely new book, similar in some ways, but greatly expanded, all new art and every design is colored with fabrics and also repeated as just a line drawing so the structure of the pattern... Read more
