Quincy Jones is one of the most famous record producers in the world. His work has repeatedly crossed and unified the boundaries of jazz, soul, and pop - from era-defining jazz projects and unique contemporary film scores to his legendary work with Michael Jackson, including the original We Are the World benefit recording and its 21st-century sequel. Bill Gibson is the author of over 30 books and videos, including the six-volume Hal Leonard Recording Method. He is a longtime producer, engineer, and teacher and has recorded multiple albums. He is an instructor for Berklee Online, a member of the Audio Engineering Society and the Society of Broadcast Engineers, and a voting member of the Recording Academy.

...but that's not why I bought the book. "Q On Producing," sounds to me like it's going to be the new bible for aspiring producers everywhere on all the little tricks of the trade, from the grand master himself--Quincy passing the torch on to a new generation. That's why I bought it. Don't get me wrong, Quincy Jones is an amazing guy, and if you want a very interesting read of his experiences and journey through life in music, including great conversations with artists he's worked with, GET THE BOOK!
It is set up in bite-sized pieces perfect for a coffee table. However, aside for some inspirational advice from Q, there isn't much reason to take this book into the studio with you.

First of all, I'm a huge Quincy Jones fan. If there's one man who's done it all, seen it all, MET them all, and loved them all (while living a true rags-to-unimaginable-riches story) - it's this man. Not only as a musician, but also as an award-winning composer crossing multiple genres and into film; as an arranger/orchestrator, and of course as a producer - most famously for Michael Jackson, George Benson, The Brothers Johnson and Patti Austin among others.
That said, I was very excited to see this new book (which is apparently part 1 of a trilogy), and to see the man out promoting it - despite the fact that he said they "forced him into it". I was also excited to see it published by a music publisher, Hal Leonard, because it meant (well, I thought it did, anyway...) that it would be hopefully be an informative "industry" book for musicians, producers, songwriters, and not just another biography.
Sadly, the book is put together very sloppily. Misspellings, line errors - everywhere. Just gives you the impression that Gibson put this together with haste. And that's just the surface - the book lacks SERIOUSLY in coherence, it's jumping all over the place. Most "paragraphs" - they're anecdotes, to be honest - are titled misleadingly, and often have nothing to do with the content thereafter. The REASON for this, I'm guessing, is the fact that Gibson based it on interviews he conducted with Q, they didn't set out to write this book together - and it's that "stream of consciousness" you definitely do sense from reading this book. It could've REALLY benefitted from better (or any?) editing.Read more ›

I was really disappointed by this book. I've been a fan of Q's work for 40 years and looked forward to some insight about what made Q's productions shine. Unfortunately, there was very little substance, but there was a lot of "feeling the magic" and testimonials to Q's magnificent character and how that made the music happen. But, if you are looking for some behind-the-scenes skinny on the record-making business or what happened in the control room on Q's famous records - this is the wrong book.
Coincidentally, I received this for a Christmas gift along with the recent Todd Rundgren book which analyzes his production history. That actually takes you behind the scenes into the world of album making, without the glossy, coffee-table, color pic laden pretense that the "Legacy Series" offers.
If there are going to be additional volumes, please make them have some meat. Even the "bonus" DVD, where the author plays excerpts from Q's work, to attempt to engage him, end up producing (no pun intended) generalities and platitudes, without real detail.

I'm trying to record a few amateur songs, feel that I need more education before doing it and got this book to see if it could help me even not knowing who Quincy Jones was.This is not a manual on producing. But it gives insights how he worked - his team members, engineers, mixers, musicians. In one of the chapters he describes how he had a question to a teacher of music composition Nadia Boulanger. Before answering him, she send him to do some tedious exercises that will help me to understand the issue. In the essense, this book is in a similar way, it gives you some bullet point that you need to do your own research to understand it, to listen all those records, albums that are now freely available online, compare Sinatra records produced by Q and by someone else, see the difference. For example, if you never listened to James Ingram like me, there's not much information you get from reading about him. But if you listen and ask yourself if you'd record him if you had a chance, Q gives you an answer why he did it. Hope my review will help someone to make a right decision.

I feel that to get to know the music of today you have to understand it and this is were Quincy has gone. Working with the artist and then there music makes a real difference. Now this is the magic of music especially working with the business of music.
