The Livio NPR radio is an internet radio that is dedicated to locating and storing "favorite" NPR stations from nationwide sources. Additionally, it's possible to access 16,000 worldwide streaming stations (Livio's information) that are not NPR affiliates.

Shipment was prompt, and the radio responded appropriately upon installation. The wi-fi connection required some minimal expected procedures, and it worked as intended. I read one reviewer elsewhere who complained about the poor quality sound from its 3" speaker. Well, that's a big "DUH," IMHO. I would not have bought the radio to listen only through its built-in speaker. When I read that it had stereo audio outputs, I fully intended to play it through my existing home stereo system, and in that setup it sounds good. The radio's own speaker is an adequate monitor speaker, but I doubt that it's intended to be the primary aural output.

Through my wi-fi connection the drop-outs and re-buffering procedures have been nearly non-existent. I experience mostly uninterrupted good stereo sound. If I didn't have wi-fi, I can connect to my DSL modem with the ethernet cable that's included in the package.

My main complaint (preventing 5 stars) is the poorly organized instruction manual that accompanies the radio. One audio connection diagram is clearly wrong, and it's contradictory to a correct one on a facing page. A procedure is introduced on one page and obscured by information that is not helpful, but 2 pages later clarifying information is found. I called those flaws to the attention of a tech support person who said he would pass the information up the line.

I really wanted to like this radio, and kept it until the last possible day before returning it. My main problem with it was that the internet connection was spotty at best. I had no trouble setting up the connection the first time; however, at least two or three days a week I would turn on the radio and it would get stuck endlessly searching for my wireless signal... despite having a strong signal from my router 15 feet away and despite the flawless connection on my computer, which was twice as far away from the router. The only solution to this problem I found was to unplug the radio and plug it back in. This often, but not always, solved the problem. Some days the radio just refused to connect at all. I may have had a defective unit, which could potentially explain my second problem: the poor range of the remote. It only worked consistently from about 8 feet away, and even then only if it was oriented just so. Depending on how far away you may expect to be from the radio, a remote with this short range may be useless (as it was for me). My third major issue I suspect cannot be explained by having a defective unit. One of the main reasons I chose this radio over other choices was because I primarily listen to NPR and figured that it would be extremely easy to find all NPR shows. Not so. I was expecting something like a menu that conveniently listed every NPR show alphabetically or by some other easily navigable means. Instead, I had to guess which ambiguous category, sub-category, or sub-sub-category a particular show of interest might be classified under. I was unable to find half of the shows I was interested in, even by doing a search of the title... even though I know the shows are available for free online.Read more ›

Absolutely great product. Imagine being able to listen stations from every continent of this earth right in your own kitchen. Makes cooking dinner and sipping wine a pleasure. Especially good if you like certain genres of music, such as classical or jazz (as I do) or if you are multi-lingual (as I am). Incidentally, the best jazz comes from France and Poland. One caveat: the remote needs fingers of Charles Atlas to operate. It is not for girlie-man fingers like my own. The sound was vastly improved with the addition of powered Philips speakers. Ditch your TV and get a Livio (or other)Internet Radio!

The NPR Radio by Livio surprised and delighted me. I got this as a gift for someone who loves NPR. I was thinking it would be great for her to listen to the podcasts or tune in to the local channel. No, it does this plus 1000's more. I can tune in to any radio station that is streamed out on the internet...in the world! We were listening to a 90s radio station in Brazil by the end of the night.

The receiver of the gift was extra impressed with the foreign language stations. She could work on her Spanish or Portuguese and listen to music at the same time.

It has all of the NPR podcasts from recent memory (it seems like at least a month).

I was a little worried that it cost so much, and I am skeptical that they may have added some unnecessary weight to make it feel heavier and higher "quality", but it is a fantastic machine.

I agree that the back light doesn't have a dimmer, but I had no problems connecting it to my wireless even with a WPA key. We won't be sitting it next to the bed but it's great for the corner of the bathroom.

I'm giving it 5 stars even with a couple shortfalls because I was SO impressed with this product.
