Book Description

Centuries ago, a desperate pirate queen risked everything to bury a cursed island and send its secret to Davy Jones. Now if small town supersleuth Johnny Socko doesn’t discover it soon, he’s going to die of boredom.

Crisscross the Caribbean with Anne Dubois, a right cunning lass whose sword carves a vicious brand of buccaneer vengeance across the Spanish Main. When she chases a fabled treasure into uncharted latitudes, she finds herself square in the crosshairs of a deformed pirate captain, part man, part myth. Their deadly game of cat-and-mouse became one of the lost legends of the Caribbean. No one knows how it ended. Or where.

Enter Johnny Socko. He’s the greatest double-threat detective / quarterback his high school has ever known. And while his name still dominates the local headlines, he’s long since cleaned up all the smuggling rings and international art thieves his sleepy coastal community had to offer. Even the cattle rustlers have left town. When Johnny stumbles onto a clue to Anne’s fateful shipwreck, he jumps at the chance to escape the tedious life of a football all-star.

Anne had her shot at history and disappeared without a trace. Now Johnny must dive every shipwreck, decipher every code, and deploy every gadget in his comic book arsenal to escape a similar doom.

The Raiders of Castillo del Mar is a rollicking mashup of 1950s teen detective fiction, fused with a powder keg of swashbuckling pirate adventure. It’s cutthroats vs. quarterbacks. The Pirates of the Caribbean meet The Hardy Boys.

Anne and Johnny are two halves of the same treasure map, destined to collide in the tempest-tossed tropics of the Caribbean, where an unholy secret lurks in the dread spires of Castillo del Mar.

She vows to plunge the stronghold into darkness. He plans to light it back up.

The Raiders of Castillo del Mar is everything a good summer read should be - fun, entertaining, action-packed and full of adventure. The principal characters leap off the page into your imagination quickly and never quite let go until you turn the final page of the story. "Castillo del Mar" is two stories in one; the story of pirates, all desperately looking for the same thing - ultimate treasure, and the story of teen-age adventure-lover Johnny Socko, the girls who adore him, and his insatiable quest for his own adventure.

Johnny is just a kid in the 50's - if by "just a kid" you mean a football star, local hero and well-known adventurer. Oblivious to the two girls vying for his attention, Johnny finds an old lantern washed ashore near his Florida home. Upon reading the note safely stored inside, he sets off on a fantastic journey that takes him from his hometown to a historic seaport, to Cuba, and finally to the mythical Castillo del Mar itself.

Woven throughout Johnny's story is the story of the pirate lass Anne and her unlikely companion, Titus, a soldier turned unlikely pirate, who is caught in Anne's unlikely spell. Together and separately, they are on the hunt for ultimate treasure, and the devious pirate who seeks only to save himself. It's only when they encounter Castillo del Mar that their story heads on a collision course with Johnny's quest.

Raiders of Castillo del Mar combines all the best elements of pirate stories with the heart of a young Indiana Jones-like adventurer. Full of memorable characters, witty dialogue, and enough laughs to keep you smiling, Raiders of Castillo del Mar is the perfect addition to your summer fun reading list!

5.0 out of 5 stars Adventure Literature of the Most Excellent Kind!!! August 3, 2012

"The Raiders of Castillo del Mar" is easily one of the best, if not THE BEST, book I have read this year!!! Amazing storytelling, fantastic writing, great pacing, wonderfully developed characters--not to mention exciting end-of-chapter cliffhangers--this novel has it all! The development of characters in both time periods--the days of the buccaneers and the innocent 1950s--is flawless, and the meshing of the two storylines into the final climax is so seamless and makes so much sense that you can't help but finish this tale hoping that the authors will publish another novel as soon as possible. Also, the homage to early "teen" detective fiction is respectful to that genre without being condescending or campy. The story would make a wonderful movie! Congratulations to the authors, Shane Lindsay and Tristan Lindsay on this phenomenal debut novel!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fun and Inventive Adventure June 18, 2012
Format:Paperback
This is a nice old fashioned pirate adventure. The story focuses on Johnny Socko, a sort of boy detective in the vein of the Hardy Boys, who discovers a message, sent from long ago. The cryptic message leads him on a mission to solve the mystery of its origin, and the secret ever-evolving treasure surrounding it.

The story unfolds by having alternating chapters of Johnny and the story from the past he is investigating, and it builds to a grippingly exciting and magical ending. The story twists around folding in on itself by using clever tricks and convincing methods of deciphering codes and clues left behind by the pirates. The boy wonder, Socko, often seems to run into a dead end, only to have the clues come together thanks to the help of his dog or one of his two love interests. These parts of the story brought back memories for me of reading teen detective fiction or watching The Goonies as a kid, but it is all done with a playful tongue-in-cheek knowingly giving me that nostalgic feeling.

The pirate story uncovered by Johnny is remarkably inventive. Everything seems to circle around until even the small details that I thought insignificant in the beginning were popping up again at the end. The puzzle pieces fit perfectly and the way that each piece is revealed is just plain fun. And that is what is best about this pirate adventure. It's fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Takes me back to the books of my childhood November 1, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
This is one of those stories that sneaks up on you. At first you think it's a standard swashbuckling adventure. Then it takes a hard right turn into classic detective fiction. Then things really start to get interesting.

Johnny Socko is kind of a big deal in his small home town. Captain of the football team, dating the head cheerleader, solving a wide range of mysteries. He latches on to a new clue to the disappearance of a pirate ship hundreds of years ago, and soon he's jetting around the globe, ignoring his girlfriend and his grades as he hopes to make history.

The pirates in question are a bloodthirsty lot, led by Anne Dubois, who happens to be an expert swordswoman. They start out ruthless but gradually are revealed to be heroic, in light of the villain, who turns up like Jaws halfway through the book and really makes an impact.

The book is full of high adventure and intrigue, and I especially enjoyed the twists and turns the plot seems to take as the two separate storylines unravel. It doesn't pretend to be highbrow fiction, but if you're looking for a great and imaginative adventure tale, it's hard to go wrong with this one.
