This is a wonderful book of stories to read to children, historical facts, fantasy, and all around information with regards to Christmas. IT IS NOT A BOOK FOR CHILDREN TO READ AS INDICATED IN THE LISTING.....THIS IS AN ADULT BOOK WITH ADULT LEVEL READING. It has beautiful pictures and illustrations. Very diverse and very much liked by my friends in the teaching profession. The book is in four parts: The Birth of Christ, The History Of Christmas, The Literature of Christmas, and Christmas Around the World. Very well done and certain parts are great for reading to children, while other parts serve as adult interest only...I enjoyed it a great deal.

This lavishly illustrated book begins with the story of Christmas as told in the Bible, from the prophecy of the birth of John the Baptist to the Massacre of the Innocents, then continues with a history of the holiday by Rumer Godden and a large collection of stories, reminiscences, and poems by authors ranging from Selma Lagerlof, Boris Pasternak, Mark Twain, and William Shakespeare to Jules Supervielle, O. Henry, Betty Smith, and Isabella Maud Rittenhouse. Among other things you'll find here the script for Menotti's "Amahl and the Night Visitors," Dickens's "Christmas Carol" (caveat: it's edited), "The Gift of the Magi," Truman Capote's "A Christmas Memory," R. P. T. Coffin's "Christmas in Maine," and Jack Schaefer's "Stubby Pringle's Christmas," the story of an out-at-the-knees cowhand who gives "all he has" to make the day merry for a poor homesteader and his family. The margins contain an assortment of old legends and customs of the season, as well as verses from poems and traditional carols, and at the end there is a section of "Christmas Around the World," with traditions from nine different countries ranging from the Middle East to Poland to England to Mexico. So far as I'm able to discover, none of the contents have appeared in RD itself. This volume should be in the collection of every household that celebrates Christmas at all, and would make a splendid source for Advent read-alouds.

I've read this book from cover-to-cover for the last twenty-five Christmases. I needed to give the book a rest & bought a new copy. I have many Christmas books, but this is my favorite. Stories, poems, pictures - it's a great book!
