Review

Have you ever wanted to think like Sherlock Holmes? Have you wondered how that "mind palace" or "memory attic" works which has recently been mentioned in Sherlock BBC's "Hounds of Baskerville", and which Doyle wrote of in "A Study in Scarlet"? Have you been impressed by the great detective's deductive powers and been envious of his abilities? Joe Riggs, who is sometimes called the "real Sherlock Holmes," has written a book to show us how we can do it, too. "It's time to learn some wonderfully mental things," he writes; and this is what the book offers us. It is a wonderful guide working with Riggs's own experiences, scientific discoveries and logical explanations in a way which is not at all patronising, but helpfully suggesting how we can become more aware, healthy and perceptible of our surroundings. Appealing to the reader, Riggs promises that everyone who finishes the book will be surprised by what they can achieve; and believe it or not, it is not an empty promise. Joe Riggs explains to us which devices he uses "as a Mentalist that can expand your mind-power, super charge your memory, heighten your deductive and observational powers, and transform the way you think." Yes, he offers tips how to build our very own mind palace and how to easily memorise large numbers ... or our shopping list. In addition, he explains how to read people by becoming aware of the mechanics of non-verbal communication. Remember Doctor Lightman in "Lie to Me"? Yes, that is exactly what we are talking about here; only that Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Lightman are fictional characters, whereas their techniques are very real and, let's face it, very cool. - The Baker Street Babes

More About the Author

Mentalist & Consultant Joe Riggs

For the past 10 years, Joe Riggs has been dazzling audiences with his own unique style of cutting edge, mind-altering, psychological entertainment. In fact, he has staked out his own space: The World of Joe Riggs. At only thirty-three years old, Joe is already an internationally acclaimed Mentalist, Psychological Entertainer, Deductive reasoning specialist and Consultant; currently based in the United States. Whether he's performing for entertainment or educational purposes Joe's singularly exclusive brand of Mentalism entails his adept use of: Deductive Reasoning, Nonverbal Communication Analysis, Psychology, Human Behavior, Hypnosis, suggestion as well as his highly developed mental acuity and eidetic [ahy-det-ik] memory. Having mastered the combination of these and a plethora of other higher-order thinking skills, Joe possesses an absolutely uncanny skillset of deductive, as well as intuitive, powers. To say this riveting performer is unique would be a drastic understatement. Despite his noble humility, he truly appears to be omniscient, perhaps even omnipotent. Then again, that is his job. Let's take a peek down the rabbit hole that is his life, and begin to shed some light on the enigmatic world of Joe Riggs.

The Child Who Knew Too Much
Joe began this life-long obsession at a very early age; perhaps even earlier than he realizes. He was born on April Fools Day, a day which has significant implications to those who soon were to watch Joe's skills unfold. Joe Riggs was raised in an exclusive metaphysical community, by a psychic, tarot-card-reading mother, and surrounded by people exhibiting any number of metaphysical 'talents;' Joe mastered each and every one of them. From reading tarot cards, to rune stones, to graphology (handwriting analysis) to psychometry (a type of psychic energy-reading done on one's personal belongings); Joe was known early to be the child prodigy of this community.
Having mastered the methods of the psychics of his community at an early age, it wasn't long before this brilliant boy had seen through their superstitious belief systems. Joe was already exhibiting powerful skills of observation and deduction, and soon realized he'd mastered specific methods that said 'psychics' employ, even if the psychics, themselves, never claimed to employ any scientific methodology at all.

Rather, psychics give credit for their predictions and proclamations to a special connection with the spiritual realm, and prey on the weak and the grieving; which is something that never sat well with a young man of such character and mental prowess. Joe was as frighteningly good at displaying the arts - and the sciences - of any of these metaphysical 'gifts' as any of the psychics, but he understood the science and the methods behind what he was doing. Having an eidetic memory didn't hurt his early mastery, either. Though he denies all existence of 'psychic power,' audiences of thousands continue to protest, otherwise, and claim he's in denial of his 'real' psychic powers!

"The Real Sherlock Holmes"
If you ask Joe, he'll tell you it was his lifelong obsession with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous detective, Sherlock Holmes, which gave him the inspiration to become the closest thing to the beloved fictional character, in existence. Joe spent a good part of his life mastering, among his vast array of other skills, the art of advanced deduction, and has the ability to gain a wealth of information about a person with what seems like just a glance. He has, in fact, been repeatedly dubbed, "The Real Sherlock Holmes."

The truth is that the mixed mastery of his innumerable skills combined to create the closest thing to a mind-reader that actually exists. In addition, his brief dive into powerful magic also taught him the art of deception, and its effects on the mind. Joe even spent his career as a close-up Magician secretly studying people and their behavior. Magic came with the opportunity to enter people's voids. While table-hopping, he was still performing, but more importantly; studying and practicing the skills in which he was actually the most interested. After all, studying people, deduction, and having a personal history that includes learning the methods of the psychics, could only serve to make anything he tries his hand at more powerful.

Next, Joe dove deeper into his more academic studies in psychology. He mastered Neuro Linguistic Programming (and is literally a Certified Master, several times, over), as well as the powers of suggestion, multiple forms of Rapid Induction Hypnosis, and the art of persuasion, to name a few. Joe was quickly moving into the field most commonly known as Mentalism, yet the term is almost a misnomer for Joe.

Usually, a Mentalist is a performer who simply displays the illusion of the talents with which Joe has been unusually gifted. He soon realized he had developed his skills to the point that he could actually do what most Mentalists only pretended to be able to do! Recognizing his unlimited mental potential, Joe focused his energy on creating his unique brand of Mentalism; which incorporates powerful aspects of Neuro Linguistic Programming, instant induction hypnosis, deductive reasoning, the 'reading' of physical and linguistic cues, a deep knowledge of human behavior, and the use of advanced suggestion to create a captivating, jaw-dropping, performance art. You can't even find this incredible skill set in a Sherlock Holmes novel!

On a Mission, With a Purpose
Prior to moving to Dallas, to debut his unique brand of entertainment, Joe's personal world was put to the ultimate test. During one, short, two-week period, Joe lost all of his possessions in a devastating fire and was involved in a horrific accident in which his car was struck twice by a tractor-trailer truck and he slammed into a guard rail at 70 mph. Miraculously, Joe walked away, without a scratch, from a totally decimated car. His life, focus, determination, and purpose were forever altered, once again.

A Phoenix Rises
Instantly, Joe knew his mission was to bring his mesmerizing Mentalism and mind-altering gifts to the masses; to dazzle the sensibilities, to reprogram the way people think, to break down their barriers, and to education others about the extraordinary potential of the mind. He does this, and everything else, with his inspiring, captivating charisma and contagious spirit.
He is highly advanced in a very sophisticated, and little-known, style of rapid-induction hypnosis, which he has used to help many people over the years to overcome seemingly insurmountable hardships, and to discover - or rediscover - their own human potential, and their personal talents and abilities. He also consults on a variety of topics, for an array of audiences from the most humble to the most elite. He truly is:

"The Man Who Knows Too Much"
Joe's ground-breaking performances have captivated the minds and imaginations of millions! His face has graced the covers of major newspapers, and his displays of this incredible array of 'mystical' talents prompted his selection as the keynote speaker at the 2009 ComParaCon paranormal convention, as well as to become a resident Mind Power Expert at SelfGrowth.com, the largest self-improvement website on the internet. And no; no one will ever forget his unbelievable psychokinetic feat on a Dallas radio show, when he caused metal to bend in people's homes, simultaneously, all across the country.

Then, a world-famous Texas institution called Joe for a private performance. For once, the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders were on the other end of awe! Several videos of Joe using his uncanny, instant-induction hypnotic techniques and NLP have been honored in the Top 100 Most Viewed Videos of the Day on YouTube in multiple countries, including: the United States, Israel, France, Italy, England, Korea, Australia and Japan. Major corporations such as: Caesars, Hitachi, and Omni Hotels have all sought out, and retained, his remarkable talents. Whether he's running seminars, consulting, teaching, training, or performing; there is always something you want this man to do for you, your friends, or your business.

After a recent performance, two wide-eyed spectators and converts were reliving their amazing night. The first said, "Before my very eyes, he levitated two pairs of eyeglasses and reached into people's brains to pull out names and places they had stored there, in private." The other responded, "Yeah, I didn't know whether to shout out with amazement or run for the exit!" Typical? Doubtful! But, this is just scratching the surface of the irresistible, magnetic attraction of a Joe Riggs performance.

Oh, and did we happen to mention that he's an incredibly talented, multi-faceted musician, who can play anything with a string, and beautifully? He is also rather adept at a little something called "spot reading;" which means that he can read and play a piece of music, simultaneously, at first sight, flawlessly. Perhaps we'll delve more into that rare talent in Episode II of "Inside the World of Joe Riggs."

As Joe often says, and in the words of his favorite fictional mentor, Sherlock Holmes: "when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth."

I was expecting something much more for 10 bucks.

The first half of the book acts like a filler. It's only in the second half where you get something juicy.
I do find however some of the instructions rather confusing and not quite good enough.

It does cover some interesting ideas and "tricks" you can do.

However i would probably try to spend my money on something else. This is more like a 10$ leaflet than a book.

If Sherlock Holmes wrote a book (other than The Whole Art of Detection and The Practical Handbook of Bee Culture), it might be something like this.

In fact, Holmes did write some of it in the sense that quintessential quotes from the Master are spread throughout this little book. Riggs, a mentalist, psychological performer, and consultant, has been called "the real Sherlock Holmes" for his ability to read people. A Sherlockian, he wears the label proudly.

In the first part of the book, Riggs calls upon his upbringing as the child of psychics to expose the tricks of the trade. He discusses the seven subjects that are on people's minds all the time, cold reading (no preparation), hot reading (advance work needed), something called the Forer/Barnum effect, and how psychics cover up when they go wrong. He names names.

Part II is perhaps more practical for most of us. Here, Riggs offers advice on how to develop a supermemory, how to read body language, and how to detect lies. "Much like Sherlock Holmes," he writes, "an adept Mentalist can gather a wealth of information from a person or place within minutes, or even seconds. Sherlock may be fictional, but his tools and powers are not. Let's develop them."

That's hard to do with a short book as your guide. I would have loved a much longer volume exploring these subjects in greater depth. I'm looking forward to the sequel.

A real find to lovers of Sherlock Holmes and his diabolical way of thinking! Joe Riggs is a master of deductive reasoning - using his well honed skills he can deduce a persons history within minutes o meeting them, tell what has gone on in what appears to be an empty room but which screams at him with clues and insights so meaningful it would seem to the untrained eye that Joe was some kind of super psychic - But no, these are down to earth real and learnable skills that can enhance your everyday life and interaction beyond what you could imagine!.

The layout takes you step - by - step through the skills building as you progress through the book - these include in-depth understanding of a persons wants and needs through cold reading skills to remembering what you have seem moments before with enhanced memory skills....

All in all, this is an enjoyable ride through the mind of a modern day Holmes - Highly recommended!

At first glance, this book may seem short but rest assured there's far more than meets the eye in front of you! Through the first portion of the book, and through the fascinating account of his life as a child raised in a community of psychics, or as he calls them, charlatans, we are taught in detail the methods used by the psychic community to exploit people into believing their outrageous claims. The second half of the book is devoted to cultivating our observational and deductive abilities via a vast array of skills including nonverbal communication, speed reading people and advanced memory techniques just to name a few! Being an avid Sherlockian and forensics investigator myself as well as a hardcore skeptic, I find Mr Riggs provides the reader with the ultimate set of tools to apply the deductive and observation methods of the Great Detective into our daily lives. A book you won't regret having around,

You buy a book by someone called 'The Real Sherlock Holmes' who clearly has a lot to live up to with such a grand title. Yet the answer to the question 'does it live up to it?' Oh my god yes!! Over and over again! What is provided within these pages is an exquisite insight into the mind of a mental specialist! It quickly becomes apparent by the knowledge that is imparted within this book that a specialist is precisely what he is! Each chapter does exactly as it says it does, tells you precisely what to do and how to do it yet in such a way as to not over face you or overwhelm you in any way. It is done in such a way so you are never put off by the outlined work within each chapter. I would like to make a particular note of the chapter regarding the science of deduction, the magnitude of the wisdom you the reader receives for the mere pittance of the asking price is outstanding. Covered concepts such as observation and deduction via self annihilation and the suppressing of emotions to allow clear reasoning are just magnificent. I personally have had the rare pleasure (as it is I live on a different continent) to have Joe demonstrate his Sherlock worthy deductive skills for me. Watching these skills be performed in front of you is truly phenomenal! The best part is that they are all in this wonderful book! I showed him around my living room for less than TEN seconds via my laptop’s webcam, He then proceeded to deduce nearly my entire life story in unimaginable detail! Do yourself a favor and if you want to know how to think like or begin to build your mind like Sherlock Holmes then buy this book! NOW!!!!!
