5.0 out of 5 stars Good Pregnancy Guide November 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Being pregnant is such a special and blessed occassion. I have the second one on the way, so I decided to be a bit more proactive this time and find some good books to read on the subject. I must say I was pleasantly surprised with how helpful this book was. I particularly enjoyed the sections on Emotional and Physical readiness. This is SO important! You have to "know thyself" before you enter into this amazing journey.

This is a really good pregancy guide that I have already recommended to my friends.

1.0 out of 5 stars Beware: Inaccurate and Poorly Written November 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am a childbirth educator and I read everything I can get concerning birth. I got this book on my kindle thinking it might have some cool info to share with my students.

This booklet is very brief and is a quick read, which might be good for busy women. [I read it in 10 minutes]. I see other reviewers calling this book "comprehensive" and that actually made me laugh - this is 20 topics covered very briefly and superficially.

Much of the medical information in the book is just wrong - relaxin does not relax muscles [it relaxes ligaments and connective tissues], prostaglandin does not cause dilation and labor [it softens the cervix and ripens it in preparation for labor but does not cause dilation or contractions], there are several innaccuracies on the Cesarean page and the induction page as well.... I could go on. It is just bad information. The author does not have a good grasp of the science and biology involved with pregnancy and the birth process.

She says in the description that this book will have you breastfeeding like a champ. I thought this book was very anti breastfeeding, making it sound like something disgusting and horrible and painful. She devotes more time to how to dry up your milk [and how horribly painful it is] than she does to breastfeeding advice. She is very positive about formula without sharing any of the disadvantages. It would have been fine with me if she had given a balanced view, but she was very negative about breastfeeding.

The writing is not good either. Grammatical errors and poor wording really made it hard to enjoy.

At best, this is bad advice. At worst, it could cause problems for a mom who uses this as her guide.

There are many excellent books out there on pregnancy, but this is definitely not one of them. Look elsewhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pregnancy Books For First Time Moms November 27, 2012
By Dave
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
"The Realities of Motherhood" is a good primer that informs the perspective or new mother what she can expect during and after pregnancy.

It starts out with a wake-up call to the short and long term economic realities of becoming a mother. The book addresses and allays many of a new mother's fears about labor, C-Sections and medical problems during delivery. The new mother is also warned about the temporary and the permanent changes to her body that she can expect, from changes in her breast and foot size, to changes in her vision acuity.

The most valuable feature of "The Realities of Motherhood" may be that it reassures the mother-to-be that the strange sensations she is experiencing and will experience are normal and natural.

ZOO The Realities of Motherhood is a comprehensive and informative book detailing the expectations, fears and changes that a pregnant woman may encounter during pregnancy and in giving birth.
Speaking bluntly through the eyes of a Mother, Katrina minces no words and outlines what changes can happen in a diverse range of circumstances!
Both emotional and physical readiness are covered in a way that leaves no stone unturned. Rest assured the pregnant woman will find this book a knowledgeable and captivating read.
Well written in a clear methodical way, this is a must have tool-kit for the realities of Motherhood!
