Book Description

The much awaited second book to the epic Empire Series.

"Maybe I want to find out what's worse than dying."

After escaping the Empire, Adrian Stannis thinks that he's free, as long as he can keep his head down and stay out of trouble. But trouble is just around the corner and keeping those he cares about free may not be as easy as he thought.

Despite his best efforts, Adrian is plunged into the world of bounty hunters while Kali and Bryce try to rescue him and find themselves entangled in the plans of a rebel leader. The deeper they go, the more mysteries they uncover until it culminates in the explosive ending that is sure to leave you breathless.

A sequel that can be read as a stand-alone, The Rebels is an exciting addition to the Empire series.

Disclosure: I received a free ebook copy of this novel from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis: After escaping the Empire, Adrian Stannis is plunged into the world of bounty hunters and rebels, each one valuing his head with the kind of single-minded intensity that does not bode well for his dream of peace and a fully stocked lab in a quiet and obscure corner of the galaxy.

Dragged along against his will by a barbarian intent on selling him back to the Empire, Adrian 'accidentally' kidnaps an emergency room doctor, while Kali and Bryce try to find him and become embroiled in an adventure of their own.

My Thoughts: I read the first book in this series, The Empire in April of this year review here if links are enabled). This book jumps right into the action and I struggled to remember what happened in the previous book, but then I found a page on the author's website that offered an alternate first chapter - here, on her current projects (if links enabled) - and that helped.

This book sometimes read like a comedy of errors - miscommunications, misunderstandings, and missed connections leading to people chasing all over the galaxy on unnecessary searches. One hunter team, bounty hunter, or rebel group after another kept showing up. It occasionally made me roll my eyes, but it did keep the tension high, and the problems with the Empire versus the rebels... well, it certainly made for a most interesting moral dilemma.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great space adventure September 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I received a complimentary copy of this book in order to
review it. I didn't know it was part of a series when I read it. It was a bit confusing at first, but it is very good as a stand alone novel as well. However, now that I know it is part of something bigger, I'm going to go back and read the book before this and finish out the series. I don't usually read this genre, but I found myself getting sucked into the story. The characters each have quirks that make you want to get to know them better. And there is a huge shocker near the end that makes you anxious for the next book. Read it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book Worth Savoring!!! August 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The Rebels drags you into the middle of an action packed adventure. This science fiction tale is filled with heart stopping scenes, which compelled my eyes to delightfully dance over the pages of this masterpiece. Elizabeth Lang excels in creating a book filled with a mixture of everything us avid readers would consider to be "a great read." The Rebels continues off where The Empire left us, Adrian Stannis fleeing from those who literally want his head, or more accurately, his mind. The most wanted man fools himself into believing if he lies low enough, he and those close to him are safe. Things change quickly when reality, AKA the bounty hunter, comes charging in and beats Adrian Stannis into captivity.

If you believed Elizabeth Lang was done bringing in strong characters into the picture, you thought wrong. The Rebels introduces the readers to Jon Tucker, one of the leaders of the Rebellion against the Empire. Learning more about the barbaric, bounty hunter is like an itch you're going to want to scratch. This book is an exhilarating read, one also filled with the perfect amount of humor. What moves you to fight on when hope is lost: love, survival instincts, or curiosity? The Rebels is a tale I proudly recommend, and I look forward to reading the last book of this series.

Thank you, Elizabeth Lang, for allowing me to wander in that incredible mind of yours. I give you two thumbs up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Science Fiction April 13, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
The novel The Rebels, the sequel to The Empire, is as engrossing as the first book in the series. The author, Elizabeth Lang, once again creates an adroit plot with strong direction and fascinating characters.

The novel picks up where The Empire left off, with heroes, Adrian, Kali and Bryce, turned fugitive and on the run. Quickly, trouble follows and the intrepid band of three are separated, with Adrian falling into the clutches of a bounty hunter and Kali and Bryce out to rescue him. But things are never what they seem, with changes of heart, and new faces and old stirring up danger.

As with the last book in the series, The Rebels best strength lies in its strong characters and their interaction with one another. Despite the fact the two main characters of Adrian and Kali are separated for much of the book, I like the way the author intensified their relationship. Also, I enjoyed the subtle interplay between the bounty hunter and the new character of Dr. Adding. They challenged each other, with attraction and respect creeping in over time.

The storyline is nicely paced and meshes together smoothly, with a deft touch of tension in the right spots. I did find the endgame of the plot a bit predictable, if still entertaining. However the cliffhanger at the end was out of the blue and shocker for me (I definitely did not see that twist coming).

The Rebels is a terrific book and I highly recommend it.

More About the Author

Elizabeth Lang was an avid reader from an early age. Science Fiction and Fantasy were and still are her passions, with occasional dips in the pools of Mystery. She has spent many years in the IT industry and started writing late in life, but once begun, she couldn't stop.

Elizabeth lives in Canada though she's worked in many places around the world. She loves traveling, learning about different cultures, and sampling their delectable foods.

She writes mainly scifi thrillers/psychological dramas, though she did accidentally end up with a scifi romance novel. She swears she has no idea how that happened.

Elizabeth has also written some humour, mainly wacky stuff that comes to her mind in the wee hours of the morning when her brain refuses to acknowledge being attached to the rest of her.

She has also dabble in a bit of poetry, but barely enough to get her toes wet.
