Format: Hardcover
Kenneth Saunders has written a poignant and engrossing work that not only explores the circumstances surrounding the brutal axe murder of Mary Ann McAuley in 1906, but also tells the story of the long-vanished settlement of New Ireland, New Brunswick.

The extent and thoroughness of his research is exhaustive: although the events he wrote about took place eighty-three years prior to the publication of his book, he located and interviewed elderly residents of the former New Ireland, one of whom knew the accused murderer, Tom Collins, personally. She and his other interview subjects, along with thousands of pages of court documents and microfilmed newspaper pages, assisted Saunders in bringing Collins, murder victim Mary Ann McAuley, settlement priest Father Edward McAuley, and the community itself back to life after decades of consignment to yellowing newspaper clippings and unspoken memories.

An old adage states that an unexamined life is not worth living, and it can hold just as true for a community as it can for an individual. Kenneth Saunders has given New Ireland resurrected purpose.
