Most Helpful Customer Reviews

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful By A Customer on August 11, 1999
Format: Audio CD
Carefully selected plates by dub innovators: King Tubby, Lee Perry, Scientist and Mad Professor. Doug Wendt's extensive liner notes detail the artists and the style: "Dub music, that stripped-down, permutated instrumental sound that began in Jamaica in the Sixties, has arguably gone on to be THE most influential phenomenon in all of pop music. From dub and its first cousin 'version' has come the craft of the DJ or voice-overs that became rap and from dub's core idea that any rhythm can be manipulated into countless off-shoots has come the modern sensibility that any song can be customized and stretched strictly through the artistry of the studio engineer." Includes many difficult to find dubs: Perry's "Scratch on the Wire" featuring Augustus Pablo on melodica, created at the artistic height of the Black Ark Studio and Yabby You's "Praises" from his "Beware Dub" LP, a hard-to-find gem. A great education!
