SAMPLES Review, February 19, 2010
This review is from: The Reincarnationist Series (Kindle Edition)
I knew this was a sample when I "bought" it. Here are my thoughts on the CONTENT, which I thought a review was - comments on the CONTENT of what you read. I worked in a bookstore for over 3 years, loving every minute of it. I have been an avid reader my entire life, and I would give recommendations to shoppers - who came in later to tell me how much THEY enjoyed what I would suggest as good reading.
All 3 samples are very good. They are well written, the characters are thought out, the action/plot flows, and these are books that, when they are released, I plan to purchase. I read for enjoyment, pure and simple. If a book can hold my interest, it is definitely worth what I pay.
I give this "book" 4 stars because it is a sample.

Well written, next the full book, February 22, 2010
This review is from: The Reincarnationist Series (Kindle Edition)
I knew when I downloaded it I had a sample, but forgot between then and reading it. So, reading it on night shift without internet or cell phone capability, I was well into the story and hence disappointed once reminded i had a sample. Now, two days later, I will buy the book because I want to know what happens with the characters. Therefore, well written books, enticing characters, interesting thesis on each, and a sufficient sample size will take me to that point where buying the book will happen. Whatever the reader may believe about reincarnation, for example, juxtaposing a true believer with a staunch non-believer who is experiencing events that strongly suggest prior life memories is a powerful tool. Who will prevail? We will all have to read the full book to find out.

Before reviewing, I would like to mention that I would appreciate if test/partial releases would be clearly marked in the product description. I was settling down for a nice long read in a rainy yurt and got 3 chapters.
I only read the chapters of the first book and I thought it flat: When I was a kid, I was a big fan of 'Ben Hur' and 'Quo Vadis' with pretty vivid descriptions of ancient Rome and those were really lacking. I also didn't buy the passion of the hero for the priestess... it just sounded to much like bodice-ripper lust to me, not deep-felt emotion.
The other thing is that if those 3 chapter were supposed to foreshadow the other, following books, they did not do their job for me -- I was not even interested to read the other test chapters.
Overall, I think the concept of sampling didn't work for these books.
PS: If I would have had the entire first book as a freebie, I might have felt differently, since many books need some time to get going and the reader needs to get used to the style of the author. From several experiences I know that complete books get a better hook into me and I am even willing to pay the later books of the series...
