Book Description

Action, adventure, suspense, and thriller in one story told with a liberal dose of humor.

Tom’s problems are not unique. His business is failing and his wife has to work too many hours to make ends meet. He is under some rather large financial pressures and wants more from his marriage and his life.

He finds his respite in the air as a private pilot. Unfortunately for Tom, he is behind on payments for his plane and is forced to take odd jobs from a local crime boss. Tom is no criminal, but the errands he is running are just slightly on the wrong side of the law and the money is almost good enough to allow him to make his plane payments.

Just as things begin to come under some semblance of control, he meets a woman who just might represent the adventure he seeks. He soon discovers that appearances, and beautiful women, can sometimes be deceiving.

“The Reluctant” is the first in the Crayder Chronicles series and yet is a stand alone story with a satisfying conclusion of its own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Surprise April 28, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I tend to like stories that involve characters and plot lines with some depth to them. "The Reluctant" did not disappoint.

The main character is a fairly normal guy and has many of the every day stress factors that many of us encounter in our own lives. Money is tight and he is bored with his life. I found myself able to relate. His solutions to those problems create moral dilemmas and I found myself rooting for him to make the right decisions as he was drawn deeper into the intrigue that is the center of the plot.

However, right and wrong can be hard to distinguish in the real world and the author did a good job presenting the main character's conflicts.

The action, when it occurs, is crisp and detailed. No punches are pulled. The dialogue is natural, easy to follow, and has a surprising amount of humor mixed in. I found myself giggling several times thinking, "I see what you did there." I may have to re-read it to see what I missed.

If you like good guys with flaws, bad guys to hate, and characters who are more than they first appear to be, you will enjoy this book.

I will definitely be buying the next in the series!

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't be reluctant to read this book. May 29, 2011
By MH
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I had wanted to read this book before, but it was only available in digital download. When I received my Kindle last week, this was one of the first titles that I put on it. A true "can't put it down" type of book. Interesting storyline, with enough twists and turns to keep your interest, but not so much as to make the story confusing and hard to follow. The author interjects a sarcasm and dry wit that adds just enough humor to the dramatic scenes, without overdoing it and taking away from the impact of the action. The book, like a good movie, was over too soon, and I'm very much looking forward to his next work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Story! May 15, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
The writers style keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the twists and turns of this wonderfully written intriguing story. Although the storyline is serious the author injects subtle humor throughout the novel that had me chuckling and empathizing with the main character.

For a non-pilot like me it was nice to have some of the ins and outs of piloting a small plane described in the story without the normal 'talking down' to the non-pilot reader that I have seen in other novels.

This is a definite must read for any suspense novel official-ado and I look forward to the continuing saga.

4.0 out of 5 stars Guy fiction May 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
C.S. Splitter writes a face paced thriller. There is a lot of detail on flying here that I found interesting. for the ladies, he does offer an insight into the way we males think. There is a lot here that a guy can identify with, writing style, world view, what we would like ladies to be like. He does avoid having his lead character, Tom Crayder, engage in the impossible physical stunts many other thriller writers seem to insert into a story. I found the first 75% of the novel to be pretty enjoyable. the last 25%, which I think sets up the series, is less believable. But, this is a fun read if you like the genre. the book is pretty well edited, avoiding most of the mistakes rampant in self published work. While I haven't decided if I will continue the series, I think it is worth a visit to sample his writing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Story with Mystery and Character July 28, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a great read about a character that the author develops facet by facet. We learn about his good traits and about his faults. He's tempted by a beautiful woman and does something he never expected to do, which leads him into the beginning of a new career. He's an average guy who has to use his wits and intelligence to survive and succeed in his new career. I was not ready for the twist but I liked it. I'm expecting to hear more about Tom in future stories.

The book is OK to read. I would have liked to have had white space between paragraphs to make reading easier. I found very few misspellings or wrong words.

I recommend this book to fans of a character-based mystery/thriller where the good guy has some flaws but comes out on top in the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Quick Thriller April 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Tom is an ordinary guy who makes bad decisions. Well, he just doesn't consider that the decisions he makes could have lasting consequences. The plot has some nice twists, and you are left guessing what the outcome might be, and occasionally you'll pause to consider what you'd do in the same situation. This is a solid debut novel, and as part of a series it is easy to consider making the purchase for The Willing (The Crayder Chronicles, Book 2) to see what could possibly happen next in Tom's life.

4.0 out of 5 stars contemporary suspense March 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The Reluctant by C.S. Splitter is the first book in the Crayder Chronicles. This adult-fiction offers suspense, mystery and murder delivered with a touch of humor. I enjoyed this easy flowing read and finished it in just a few hours. It isn't often that I read a book from a male point of view and I found it to be refreshing.

The tale is told from the POV of our protagonist Tom Crayder. A middle aged, married man, whose wife Jenny works too much as they struggle to make ends meet. Jenny is clueless about Tom's need for adventure and his straying eyes. Tom's pride and joy is his plane. In order to keep up the payments on the plane, he begins accept jobs from the head of a biker gang. Tom's never broken the law, accept maybe for a few speeding tickets but his work with Jake is questionable. Tom's only rule..No drugs. This arrangement works well for them.

Tom's other hobby is the shooting range and he goes there to decompress. He meets a young woman named Lorena and imagines taking her to a seedy hotel for a good time. Despite being a fairly calm and level headed guy, the tale that unfolds finds Tom in some risky situations. Thanks to his encounter with Lorena he finds himself dealing with life and death situations. The tale is action packed and full of suspense, murder and surprising twists. I found Tom to be witty and level headed and I realize he's not really a bad guy; he just makes really stupid choices. I am not a fan of men and women who are unfaithful and this aspect turned me off....but admittedly it makes for a good story. Having said that Tom loves Jenny and I think this is more of a mid-life crisis. Lorena is the typical other woman and she casts quite a spell on Tom.

Splitter's writing style is smooth and the tale is easy to read.

This book is written by a hack. Read the opening chapter and tell me it's not stolen, verbatim, from a manual on how to crash a plane. It has all that minus the adrenaline rush. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Seriously?
Such rave reviews I figured surely a great book. But I was pretty disappointed with the weak and unbelievable plot that was woven into a very long and boring flight lesson.
