Product Description

Emmy Sands has just bought her first house. When she first hears footsteps in the attic, she dismisses it as the groans and creaks of a new home. When she sees things moving across her living room without reason, she dismisses it as a figment of her overactive imagination. Finally, when she runs out of excuses, Emmy finally accepts that her house isn’t just old…it's actually being haunted by a thousand year-old demon named Malkos.

Malkos is not a happy demon. He doesn’t like his job. He’s supposed to torment, haunt and kill human victims but he’s bored. He’s used to being able to walk through an attic and have his prey scream with terror and call in an exorcist.

He hadn’t banked on Emmy. She doesn’t scream…she rationalizes. She accepts that she’s being haunted but she doesn’t give in to it. Malkos has finally met his match: A human who is as bored with life as he is.

Though they come from different worlds, Emmy and Malkos soon realize that they really aren’t that different after all. In the end they learn that while misery loves company, romance isn’t bad either and though it means inevitable misery for one or both, they realize that sometimes it's worth exploring new worlds to find their place in their own.

I liked how this book wasn't predictable. I didn't know how the book was going to end. Now that I finished it I hope there will be a sequel.

This review is from: The Reluctant Demon (Paperback)
The best demon-possession book you'll ever snicker through. Author Samantha Clements brings readers a new twist on demon possession in her first published book, "The Reluctant Demon". The title will grab your attention, but it is the dialogue that keeps you reading throughout the story. You may be more grossed than scared. What could have been a very short one chapter book, with a strange paranormal plot situation; instead, draws you into the daily activity of the life of a very common 34-year-old working single girl (with few friends.) Emmy is bored with her computer screen job but suddenly haunted by a demon, himself aghast at being called a ghost.

It's not an intellectual thriller, but a beach-read. I read it pond-side. Take your "serious" hat off and enjoy. You'll meet not only Malkos, a demon with a significant identity crisis; but also Dawn, ditsy, a professional girls' worst stereotype nightmare.

Maybe it is even worth a 4 1/2 star rating for this review, since the author claims to be writing a sequel--and I'll buy it.

More About the Author

Samantha Clements is a British expatriate living in Cincinnati, Ohio. She is a slightly obsessive writer which is why she has written quite a few novels over the years. The Reluctant Demon is the first one she's had published and also the first one that doesn't contain dark, twisty stories of chronically disturbed people. (Ok, well it sort of does but this one, at least, is funny).

Aside from writing, she enjoys cooking and is very proud to have learned all her fancy cooking techniques and use of pretentious ingredients from watching the Food Network and "Top Chef". Her goal is to meet Mario Batali and thank him for giving her the courage to try making her own pasta because that was the defining moment when she moved from shy cook to full-on foodie.

She also would like to meet Stephen King to thank him for writing..."On Writing," because it was that book that made her write a novel when she couldn't come up with an ending for a script. Her other favourite writers include Neil Gaiman and, naturally, J.K. Rowling. She reads a lot though so aside from those two, she likes a lot of books and a lot of authors.

Aside from writing, reading and cooking, Sam's time is spent as the 'mother' of two dachshund puppies named Rory Wrigglebottom Gilmore-Clements (Rory, for short) and Sookie-Sue Stackhouse Clements. Their favourite activities include hunting wabbits, digging holes, eating and getting their tummies rubbed. They allow Sam to live in their house because they're just that kind of dog.

Sam firmly believes that vampires should be bloodsucking fiends who happen to be quite sexy rather than sparkly "vegetarians". She also believes that, one day, she will not be the only advocate of a monthly three-day weekend.

She loves the following things: toast, cheese, cheese on toast, marmite, marmite on toast, a nice glass of beaujoulais, orange things, her family, her friends and her puppies, Harry Potter books, going out to a really nice dinner and having someone else pay and lots of other things, depending on her mood.

Sam is writing a sequel to "The Reluctant Demon," tentatively titled, "Emmy goes to Hell." You can learn more on her website:
