I liked how this book wasn't predictable. I didn't know how the book was going to end. Now that I finished it I hope there will be a sequel.

A Humorous Tale of a Haunting Relationship,
By
This review is from: The Reluctant Demon (Paperback)
The best demon-possession book you'll ever snicker through. Author Samantha Clements brings readers a new twist on demon possession in her first published book, "The Reluctant Demon". The title will grab your attention, but it is the dialogue that keeps you reading throughout the story. You may be more grossed than scared. What could have been a very short one chapter book, with a strange paranormal plot situation; instead, draws you into the daily activity of the life of a very common 34-year-old working single girl (with few friends.) Emmy is bored with her computer screen job but suddenly haunted by a demon, himself aghast at being called a ghost.
It's not an intellectual thriller, but a beach-read. I read it pond-side. Take your "serious" hat off and enjoy. You'll meet not only Malkos, a demon with a significant identity crisis; but also Dawn, ditsy, a professional girls' worst stereotype nightmare. Maybe it is even worth a 4 1/2 star rating for this review, since the author claims to be writing a sequel--and I'll buy it.

I really enjoyed this book. I do have a question--was this self-published? The one complaint I had with the whole thing was the author seems to need an editor, as I found several minor grammatical errors. Otherwise, I just loved it. The story is original: it's slightly dark but has that light, fun feeling I want from an easy read. I can see this story going places very, very easily. I am looking forward to watching the characters grow, and the ending was great. What's better than a book that leaves you wanting more? I actually cursed a bit at the last page...not many books make that happen. :) I'm looking forward to following this author. It's an exciting thing to feel like part of a beginning--and that's what this book feels like. It's the beginning of something that could become great. I hope there are more books in the pipe. Keep going, please!

I really enjoyed this book, I honestly found it hard to put it down!
I have to disagree with the negative comment. Each to their own, its the differences that make life interesting, but how could you honestly say there was no plot??!!! I found it to be witty, gripping and very different from most of the predictable stuff out there. As for the ending, I feel it encourages us as the reader to think on...what do you think happens next? I shall buy the next book to find out, but also have a few ideas of my own! I look forward to reading other books bu this clearly talented Author!

Just finished reading this book and really enjoyed it...can't think of a better way to spend a rainy Sunday. This book was a fun, light read. It was witty and engaging. I thought the characters were developed nicely and felt like I could really relate with Emmy on many different levels. The relationship between Emmy and Malkos was refreshing in that though they came from two completely different "worlds" they were able to connect and understand one another. Their conversations were funny; I especially enjoyed the back and forth banter about Little Red Riding Hood. I liked the ending because now I have a sequel to look forward to!! I can only guess what awaits Emmy! The author did a great job and I look forward to reading more of her books!

Funny, Light and Original,

I ordered this book because it looked like a nice light read. Unlike the reader above, I did not find the characters one-dimension but quirky and funny. It wasn't supposed to be a deep piece of literature, just something fun. i did find it funny and really loved the ending because it was abrupt. A good book leaves you wondering. What made me laugh is the dialog between Emmy and Malkos- it's dry and witty and you can't help admire how daring Emmy is at times. It definitely deserves a read.

The Reluctant Demon is a chick lit/urban fantasy hybrid with a bit of humor thrown in.
Emmy is a very likable protagonist and Malkos benefited from the gradual development of him as a character. Emmy's friend Dawn was kind of a jerk and I wanted to smack her. When characters elicit that kind of emotional response, I say they are well drawn! Like a lot of urban fantasy, this book includes sex but here it was handled better than most-tastefully and not overly graphic. I liked the ending because I didn't anticipate it at all. While the main focus of the story is wrapped up, it is obvious that the story continues and I am glad to see that the author is working on a sequel.

This story sounded interesting. It started slow and stayed slow for most of the time. Just when it looked like it my get interesting it ended. I won't be buying the next installment. Just wasted my time and money with the first. Plus, whoever edited this thing should be fired. They obviously had no idea how to edit a story.

I read this book in one sitting - it was engaging, funny, and brilliantly creative. Emmy Sands is an exceptionally likeable heroine - an ordinary "every woman" who deals with extraordinary supernatural events with equal parts horror, fascination, and even boredom. Reminiscent of other fantasy/sci-fi/mystery genre heroines like Sookie Stackhouse or Buffy Summers, she doesn't back down from the demon (Malkos, a well-written and intriguing character himself) "reluctantly" haunting her; rather, she engages him in a thoughtful, sometimes sarcastic manner. Despite Malkos' unusual appearance and origins, it is Emmy herself and the spell she casts over the demon that really draws you into this story.
Author Samantha Clements is a gifted, imaginative storyteller who leaves you wanting more. You may want to sell your soul to the devil for a sequel... |
