Editorial Reviews

What is "the remedy"? Ask a simple question and you may get a simple answer. "Music is the remedy," replies Kurt Rosenwinkel. It's hard to imagine a more suitable title, then, for the guitarist's brilliant new album, The Remedy: Live at the Village Vanguard. With this two-disc release, Rosenwinkel puts forward his entry in a long line of historic live recordings from the famed New York jazz club, following in the footsteps of John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Sonny Rollins, Keith Jarrett, Joe Henderson, Woody Shaw and others. Like his friends and peers Brad Mehldau, Chris Potter, The Bad Plus and others, Rosenwinkel has become a regular and much- valued presence at the Vanguard, helping to carry the club's mission forward into the new millennium. One of the most original and influential guitarists, jazz musicians & composers of his generation, Rosenwinkel is heard on The Remedy leading a marvelous quintet, with Mark Turner, his longtime musical partner, on tenor sax; Aaron Goldberg on piano; Joe Martin on bass; and Eric Harland on drums. The rapport between the players is refined and explosive. Much of the material played during that auspicious January week in 2006 was new and previously unrecorded. The Remedy marks the first live documentation of Rosenwinkel's touring group recorded live in a venue that has had much to do with the development of its group sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Rosenwinkel Killer Band! November 18, 2009
Format:Audio CD
Well I must admit I purchased this set as two seperate downloads from itunes for 9.99 apiece but only because they aren't available from the Amazonmp3 store. Anyway I think The Remedy is one of Kurt's best albums to date. The reasons for this are its live with extended takes on the compositions i.e longer solos killer live energy vibe in the performances, a great recorded live sound with each instrument in the group receiving its proper balance & a great tone. My favorite thing about this performance is that each member of this fantastic quintet which consists of Kurt Rosenwinkel on guitar, Marc Turner on sax, Aaron Goldberg on piano, Joe Martin on acoustic bass & Eric Harland on drums is each at the top of his game. This band represents the cream of the crop of NYC jazz musicians. Kurt & Marc Turner are practically reading each others minds check out track 1 "Chords" for a great example of their near telepathy during solo exchanges. I also really enjoy the rhythm sections interactive playing during the entire set, much can be discovered simply by listening only to the great Eric Harland groove with Aaorn Goldberg & Joe Martin. I'll close by saying that words can't really do this music justice you must pick this album up & experience this groups greatness with your ears.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some great stuff from Kurt January 13, 2012

It's a Live CD, long extended solos. I liked the first (of 2) CDs very much, not so much CD 2. The song "Chords" is a must hear, Kurt's playing is utterly amazing, real nice piano solo too.

Though I had watched him on you -tube,- and had heard a little of his music and guitar playing on the internet as well, I did not know just how great he is, until I had the pleasure of seeing him at the Newport Jazz Festival this last summer!!!!! He is really a very ready to go jazz guitar player, doing really much of what I myself am into- as regards to approach of the music and guitar, with great fingers, and the same with Aaron Goldberg on piano!!!!- The whole band was dynamite!!!!! I was very impressed!!!!!
I then purchased a few of his cd's --for starters!!!!!!

This CD is awesome-- and I am now a fan of Mark Turner too!!!!!! I had heard him a bit with others as we!!!-- though more now.

I just listened to it for the first time and like it very much!!!!!!

I will telll more on more listens, but as I said-- it is in many ways, what I am into musically---for myself.

Great players playing great music!!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime Modern Jazz Guitar August 20, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Kurt Rosenwinkel - Guitar
Mark Turner - Saxophone
Aaron Goldberg - Piano
Joe Martin - Bass
Eric Harland - Drums

I own most of Kurt's albums and this is probably my favorite. Kurt goes through a list of originals that are deeply organic and beautifully crafted. With exceptional soloists in Turner and Goldberg, Kurt has amazing front line support. Martin and Harland are each considered among the best on their respective instruments; their work here is exceptional. I do wish Martin would go into walking during some parts when Goldberg and Turner are swinging, but that's a minor detail. Kurt's tone here is beautiful and among the best I've heard of his. A must have.
