Book Description

Vampires, and werewolves, and demons, oh my.

Rhiannon thought facing off against a deranged child vampire was the most dangerous task she would ever have to undertake, but she's about to discover making a deal with a demon is far, far worse. Sent forward into another reality, one in which vampires are now dominating nearly extinct humans, she realizes the sooner she returns to her vampire lover, Disco, the better.

Unfortunately, time changes a lot of things, including those most trusted around her. When she's faced with a loss and betrayal unlike any she has ever known, her focus shifts from severing the debt between the demon that wants to kill her, to exacting a revenge that will bring forth consequences she never could have fathomed. By reaching out to the darkness lingering within her, she'll find the strength to push forward despite the circumstances that would see her dead and buried.

After all, when it's all said and done, all that she has left to lose is her soul.

2012 Authors After Dark Bookie Award Nominee for Vampire Novel of the Year -- The Romance Reviews & Night Owl Reviews Top Pick

Yow! I loved the new places this book took me, and the inspired twists along the way...The Renfield Syndrome roars with fun, danger, and sexy intrigue. -- Carolyn Crane, author of the Disillusionists Trilogy

Listen up, this is how you write book two for a series. The plot was absolutely non-stop, and the characters continue to be larger than the pages allow...I continue to classify this series as one of my favorite under-rated UF series out there. -- 5/5 Jessica at The Spinecracker

The twists and turns in the plot will have you weepy one moment, then laughing, then gasping, then swearing because you can't believe what you just read on the page. -- 5/5 Bells at Hanging With Bells

The Renfield Syndrome is how a second Urban Fantasy book in a series should read.  It grips you from beginning until the very end while giving you high action moments, happy moments, OMFG moments and tender moments.  Fans of UF should not miss this series. -- 5/5 Julie at Yummy Men and Kick Ass Chicks

There's a lot of action, lots of intrigue, and some fabulously juicy romantic development. Put this one up on my "favorites of 2011" shelf, thank-you-very-much. -- 5/5 Alisha at My Need To Read

...The Renfield syndrome took me over. -- 5/5 Chelsea at Vampire Book Club

This is an extraordinary addition to a completely addictive series. -- Top Pick, Bridget at The Romance Reviews

I would give this 4.5 stars if that was an option. A fast paced, roller coaster ride from start to finish, this second in the series was well worth the wait. One scene even made me tear up a bit and that almost never happens to me.

Spoilers coming up:

I did have a bit of an issue with the mind-set of Rhiannon in regard to her hook-up with Paine and the actions of Disco when he discovers that Rhiannon must have been with another man during her absence. She is flung 101 years into the future, she learns Disco is long dead and in a grief stricken moment of compassion, she sleeps with Paine after she realizes how much he loves her (this was the teary part for me; beautifully written!). How guilty would she actually feel about that? And why would she assume that Disco would have a huge problem with it once the circumstances were explained? I can even understand why, in the heat of the moment, she would delay telling Disco when she first returned. But what was with his creepy behavior towards her when she finally got to his room? He had never acted that way before, and there was no discernible reason for him to act in such a uncharacteristic manner. Then, when he senses that Rhiannon must have been with someone else, why would he completely lose it and immediately mind-rape her? He knew that the demon had something to do with her "disappearance" even if he didn't understand the entire time travel element. How did he know she hadn't been raped? The way he was characterized in the first book, one would think that he would be suspicious, but give her a chance to explain before he completely freaked. Maybe all this will be explained in the next book (although based on the excerpt included at the end of this book that doesn't seem to be happening), but that bothered me in that it was so far afield from the Disco of book 1.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner! August 23, 2011

Let me first start by saying that J.A. Saare is one of my favorite authors. The worlds she creates are so vivid, the characters are compelling and you care what happens to them, especially Rhiannon who is courageous yet vulnerable and who hides that vunerability behind a mask of bravado. The Renfield Syndrome is one of her best yet.

TRS picks up where Dead leaves off, with Rhiannon 101 years in the future in a world completely different than the one she left. What happens next, as she goes on her quest to break her bargain with the demon, Zapan, takes you on a rollar-coaster of emotion. This book makes you laugh out loud at times, your chest pound with anticipation, and constrict with sorrow. Poor Rhiannon. She must make some difficult decisions and she finds out that sometimes there are no right or wrong ones, just the ones that you can live with.

I stayed up until 4 am to finish this book and I was not disappointed. Having read the first chapter of the Ripple Effect has me counting down the time until its release.

Kudos Jamie on an excellent book!

4.0 out of 5 stars A solid follow-up to Dead, Undead... March 15, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
First of all, though this is billed as a series, I wouldn't recommend anyone read this novel without reading Dead, Undead, or Somewhere in Between (Rhiannon's Law) first. This is not a serial but there are important parts of the first novel which are needed to fully understand TRS.

At the end of Dead, Undead, or Somewhere in Between (Rhiannon's Law), Rhiannon makes a deal with a demon and is sent one hundred and one years into the future. Many readers complained this sucked and was an awful cliffhanger. I didn't agree but then again, that's me.

TRS starts off with action and doesn't quite let up. The future is a scary place where technology has been shunned, the vamps aren't in charge and werewolves run free hoping to start a war with the vampires. However, they are barking up the wrong tree (pun intended) as the vamps are just as much slaves to their captors as they are; the vamps are just given the illusion of having more freedom than they actually do.

A lot is made of Rhiannon ***SPOILER ALERT*** sleeping with Paine. Many reviewers said that if she really loved Gabriel, she would have never done this while others were perplexed how her feelings for Gabriel ran so deep in the first place and they barely seemed to know one another before she was scooped up by Zagan and sent some 101 years into the future. ***END SPOILER ALERT*** However, Ms. Saare has a way with words and I truly believe the decisions Rhiannon made were justified. I gained a lot of respect for Paine and my feelings for Gabriel are ambivalent at best in terms of his sexual relationship with Rhiannon.

I look forward to The Ripple Effect as I really want to see what happens now and whether or not Rhiannon will be able to resolve her feelings with the two men in her life. If this is a love triangle, it is very skillfully done without Rhiannon appearing to be a wh*re or a sl*t.

This was a very solid sequel to Dead, Undead and I can't complain. It was well worth the wait (though the sequel was instantly available to me). Well done, Ms. Saare.
