Book Description

Ellie is shocked and confused when her owners leave her at the animal shelter. Feeling abandoned and unloved, Ellie spends her days staring vacantly through the gate of her pen. Ellie’s life changes when she is finally adopted by a compassionate woman named Anne. Ellie and Anne form an unbreakable bond of love and friendship. A thunderstorm drives Toby, a young frightened kitten, to Anne’s porch. Anne and Ellie immediately welcome him into their family. One night, they hear an emergency broadcast announcement that a little girl is missing in the woods near their home. Anne, Ellie, and Toby join in the search to find her, and an incredible rescue team is formed. The team will be called upon again when a tornado tears through their town. Will they find any survivors?

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Book for Kids of ALL Ages -- 5+ stars November 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
What I liked: This is a book that should be on every child's bookshelf. In it, a child can explore some tough and scary situations inside the safe medium of a story, and her parents can be certain the story tells her the right things. In these pages, a couple of abandoned animals find their way to Anne, whose heart is as big as the world. Sometimes things are hard, but this adoptive family learns to stick together, and their love truly saves the day. (And best of all, my son loves this story.)

What I didn't like: Not one thing.

In sum: Buy this for your kids - today. It's a must-have. And if you read my reviews, you know I almost never say that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everyone on this team is valued August 27, 2012
By Beth
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Uplifting story that should hold the interest of most 9 -13 year Olds. Plenty of action and excitement without a lot of violence. Good lesson on why a team that leverages the talents of its individual members can be such a winning combination. She really knows how to build tension and get her readers invested in her characters. After spending a very short time with Ellie, the collie we come to understand how she feels and what she thinks. More importantly, we care enough about Ellie by the end of the 2nd chapter to want the best for her. A good story to read aloud too. I think it would be improved by professional editing, but the story is strong enough to merit 5 stars without it. Would recommend highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting, emotional and family-friendly. November 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Once again, Billi Tiner writes about the amazing bond between humans and animals. Good people doin the right thing, even when it's hard, and animals understanding and doing what people can't do without them.

This story is a series of exciting rescues that honors the strengths of each character and the love and trust that makes a team, and a family.

It is rare to find a book eveyone in a large family will be able to understand and enjoy. This book passes that test, keeping the story exciting and emotional.

Here's what I see as the book's great strength: It is for learning readers, but doesn't sacrifice story for reading level. The littlest youngster who hears this read aloud will follow the story and be emotionally involved. The grade school student who reads this on his own will find it a page turner, and have a positve reading experience.

Anyone, young or old, who loves or longs to own a pet will love this book. Anyone who cherishes or longs for meaningful relationships will love this book.

This makes it a great choice for family read-aloud time: an exciting adventure that shows the love and trust that make a team and a family.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Rescue Team stole my heart January 28, 2013
Format:Paperback
When I read the first few pages I was hooked! There were many things that I loved about this book, but one of the main themes that I loved was the "pay it forward" message that Ellie and Toby display throughout the entire story. Having been rescued, they live their lives rescuing OTHERS, both people and other animals. Ellie, being a "working" dog, finds her "job", her "purpose" rescuing others with Toby the cat, working devotedly by his side.

There are delightful "messages" or "lessons" that are learned when young people AND adults read The Rescue Team. The "pay it forward" message is clear but there are more messages such as, the power of love, devotion, determination, trust, courage, hope, to name a few.

Another aspect of The Rescue Team that I found to be delightful, was how Author Billi Tiner has the animals that are in this book "speak" to each other. There are examples of how they speak with their "eyes" throughout the book, sensing whether a person or an animal can be trusted, just by looking into their eyes. The animals in The Rescue Team "speak" to each other when no humans are around, they also have an uncanny ability to "speak" to the humans, Anne Richards, who adopts Ellie and Toby, and Brent Davis, the EMT who rescues Anne, (in more ways than one!)

Animals have an inherent form of communicating that humans who LISTEN understand, be it a "smile", a "spin", a tail wag, a cat showing love through brushing up against a human, Tiner shows throughout this book that SHE is an animal lover by her obvious understanding of these "gestures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Close to Perfect December 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Let's start honestly, my family and I are animal lovers; my 10 year-old daughter plans to be a vet someday. It goes without saying that a dog and cat story would be right up our alley, and so this review may be a bit biased.

That said, Tiner's work is a near masterpiece of children's writing. especially for a middle grade student level. Ellie's story is compelling from the beginning, and once the action begins it never slows down. Just the right length with cliffhangers coming at all the right places. For a week and a half (hey it's 10 chapters), this was the story our daughter wished to hear. We laughed and cried with the characters all the way through and just thoroughly enjoyed it.

If I have any complaints, there are a couple of minor editing misses in latter chapters, and I felt the phrase "scooped {a character} up in his/her arms" was horribly over used. These are minor points and do not distract from the story itself. We're considering "Welcome Home" for our next bedtime story as the whole family has fallen in love with Tiner's work!
