I first watched the Resident's Freak Show CD in the late '90's on a Macintosh Performa that I now keep up on a shelf. Back then, when interactive CDs were just getting started,Voyager put out an interesting array of interactive CDs for MACs. Freak Show would hold its own in today's world of creative CDs and personal computers but in the late '90's - these guys were way ahead of the future. I pull the old MAC off the shelf sometimes and watch Freak Show - it always pulls me in. It's a hidden classic.

"This isn't a game," says Jim Ludtke, artist and animator of Freak Show. "I don't really like games." Instead, Freak Show, a perverse carnival world on CD-ROM, seeks to flesh out the characters introduced in an album of the same name released several years ago by the anonymous Residents, a San Francisco band that has been cranking out exceedingly weird music for 25 years.

Ludtke's goal is to make you forget that you're using a computer by eliminating the HyperCard stench that emanates from most interactive titles. Real life metaphors replace traditional buttons, icons, and menus. For example, the "Pickled Punks" portion of the game uses a jukebox to play 88 biographies of real-life carnival sideshow performers. The concept worked for me. While touring the grounds, I forgot about the sweltering office: My mind drifted out of my body, and I began floating through Freakville.

Freak Show has gorgeously rendered 3-D eye feasts jumping at you from every direction. After attending the show featuring performances by Wanda the Worm Woman, Benny the Bump, Jelly Jack the Boneless Boy, and several other employees of the circus sideshow, you can sneak behind the tent and mouse your way through the trailers where they live. The trailers are loaded with books, old love letters, photo albums, and other animated memorabilia that tell the freaks' sad, strange stories. All the songs from the album and the complete Freak Show comic book (released last year by Dark Horse) are also cleverly integrated into the program.

Jim seems pleased with the way Freak Show has turned out. His only concern: "I hope nobody beats us to market with somebody eating worms. If they do, we're really screwed."

The original Manufacturer's Suggested Retail was $39.

Verified Purchase
I owned this years ago when I had a Mac and loved it. I just had to have it again for my PC. It is a must purchase if you love the Residence. Actually, it makes you feel like you are touring a real Carnival Side Show. Great fun.
