Book Description

February 22, 2011
Ephesians 5:33 reads, “However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.” And research done by Shaunti Feldhahn in 2006 demonstrates that "respect" is one of the most critical needs a man has in a relationship.
Have you ever wondered, “How can I possibly respect my husband?” Or, “Isn’t there MORE to being married?”

There is more.

We can help you become stronger, figure out the respect thing (it's not what you think) and become more connected to God and your husband.

More than half of marriages end in divorce in the United States, and many women that stay married are unhappy.

The Respect Dare can change all that. It is forty days of an experience that will take away the mystery that is keeping you from speaking the language of respect with your husband. It provides real life examples from women who have developed closer relationships with God and their husbands. In it, you will learn:

- How to build confidence;

- Methods to positively handle conflicts;

- Keys to better communication;

- How to develop a more intimate connection with your spouse;

- Ways to deepen your relationship with God;
- And much more!

Learn the language of respect and truly connect to the man you married with The Respect Dare.

"Doing the dares" with a small group of women has excellent benefits, providing accountability, encouragement, and discussion.

What Christian Leaders Have to Say about "The Respect Dare:"

Dr. Kevin Leman, best-selling author of "Have a New Husband by Friday:"

“Nina’s insightful steps in The Respect Dare help you along the path to a better marriage. Walk along this successful path traveled by many women to find growth and fulfillment. Take the first step, I dare you.”

Shaunti Feldhahn, best-selling author of "For Women Only: What you Need to Know about The Inner Lives of Men:"

"Believe it or not, most men need respect so much that, if they had to, they would give up love to get it – and respect empowers them to be the caring man you most need. One of the most important things you can ever do for your man – and thus for yourself -- is to read this book. From the first page you are an active participant as you go through daily scripture, self-reflection, prayer journaling and lots of ‘now I get it!’ examples. Think Nike slogan “Just Do It:” each day you find yourself DOING respect – not just thinking, praying, talking or reading about it – but DOING it. You will find your habits seamlessly changing into new ways of relating that will feel as wonderful and life-changing to you as to him."

Pastor Mark Gungor, best-selling author of, "Laugh Your Way to a Better Marriage:"

"Women need to affirm, encourage and respect their husbands with their actions and words—and sometimes it is with the lack of words that is most powerful, if you catch my drift! Respect can be shown both by what you say and often times by what you don’t say.

Many times when I speak of this to women, they launch into 20 questions: What does respect mean? What does it look like? How do I show it? What if he doesn’t deserve it? The list goes on and on. While there is no one-size-fits-all answer, or no recipe or steps to follow, understand that the whole concept of respect has more to do with you than it has to do with him.

I encourage all women to accept this respect challenge and find out if I’m right. What do you have to lose except a whole lot of selfishness, bitterness and unrealistic expectations? On the other hand, you have a great opportunity to gain greater understanding, self-confidence, joy and a better relationship with God and your husband.

Go ahead, I dare you. You won’t regret it."

Nina Roesner, author of "The Respect Dare," and creator of Daughters of Sarah(R), provides a glimpse into the lives of these women and what they have done to turn their marriages around or take them to the next level of relational intimacy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dare to be different July 21, 2009
Format:Hardcover
The Respect Dare is just that, a dare to respect your husband--no matter what the outcome. The 40-day challenge begins with a gentle nudge for wives to consider the ways in which they can grow, while focusing on a Scripture verse and a bottom line truth from real women's journeys. You'll find yourself identifying with the "Daughter's" stories. The stories are real. I lived part of them and watched many of them unfold through a Daughters of Sarah course. The questions for each day's dare will require no more than 20 minutes and the impact of answering them is lasting. The dares required each day are simple--not necessarily easy--but simple. The Respect Dare is not for the stagnant woman unwilling to grow or learn or change. The Respect Dare is not intended to create doormat wives, either. It's for the dynamic woman who, flawed as she may be, wants to love and be loved and is willing to do whatever it takes to become that woman, even respecting a less-than-perfect husband. It's written for each wife--no matter where she is in her spiritual journey and marriage--to sharpen her marital tools in her toolbox and to deepen her spiritual journey. Consider The Respect Dare as a companion on your journey along a little known, but breathtaking path: a marriage steeped in honor and respect. I double-dog dare you.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Bit on the Trite Side April 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I can only really give this book a "meh." Don't get me wrong, I totally agree with the principles espoused by the book. However, it is written just a bit too trite for my tastes. The authors use situations that they claim are real-life stories but really seem to be a bit embellished. While being sweet and forgiving to your man will definitely improve your marriage, it isn't a magic wand that makes everything sunshine and roses overnight, especially if that kind of thing isn't really his personality.

I much prefer "The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands" by Dr. Laura or, for those who want a more openly Christian perspective, "For Women Only" by Shaunti Feldhahn. In fact, it is obvious the the authors of this book have read/studied "For Women Only." The influence is apparent in several places.

The authors also plug their own workshop a bit too much for my liking. It's blatant and a bit annoying.

All in all, the ideas are good but there are other books that deliver this material in a much better, more realistic and down-to-earth way. I'm kind of glad I got this book as a lend. It was on my wishlist to buy, and I'm afraid I would have been disappointed spending the money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Gallantly Respecting Your Goofus January 9, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I gave this book a try because I think that mutual respect is very important in marriage. Mutual. Mutual respect. So I thought that perhaps the book would give some tips on how to remember to live out that kind of thing on a daily basis. Unfortunately, the kind of relationship this book seems to be talking about is not one built on mutual respect, but on long suffering tolerance and low expectations (of the wife towards the husband--this isn't extrapolation, Roesner instructs the reader to lower her expectations) and complete obliviousness (of the husband towards his wife...and just about everything else.)

It manages to insult both men and women in many of the examples. Men are portrayed like a sitcom dad or bumbling detergent commercial dad, witless and goofy, hopelessly clueless and aw shucks, what can you do? You can't expect anything from them because that would be "unbiblical"-- and here I am offended as a Christian, because nothing in the Bible declares men to be uniformly insensitive fools, that is a construct of our present day. Women are portrayed as nagging, backstabbing shrews or, on the "doing it right" side, long-suffering martyrs who silently persevere even when it would be more sensible to speak up.

The first sign of trouble was when the author started relentlessly flogging her workshops, website, and add-on workbooks in the introduction. I hoped that the marketing efforts would be contained solely in that section, but alas, it never really lets up and there are endless reminders to sign up for a session, buy another book, or "tell all your friends!" about the author and her products.

I'm only on day 14 of the Respect Dare but I've already seen incredible results in my attitude, heart and in my marriage. It's really encouraging to see God's faithfulness in renewing my heart and marriage so quickly now that I'm allowing Him to lead. Our husband's really need our respect, it's key for a man to feel respected, especially by his wife. So grateful for Nina's insight and the "Daughter's Stories" are so inspirational. Highly recommend this book for any wife, newlyweds or veteran wives!
